South County Veterans of Foreign Wars

South County Veterans of Foreign Wars If you have served in the United States Military outside of the country during a time of conflict, y

The goal of our Post is to support veterans and their families. We accomplish this through the following ways:

- We have the different scholarship programs for kids.
- We organize the 4th of July and Christmas parades.
- We organized the Halloween celebration in Old Town Nipomo last year.
- We have assisted local Veterans with utility bills to keep the heat on.
- We have made ramps for Vetera

ns to help with access to their home.
- We work with VASH. VASH helps Veterans get into housing but they don't have money for immediate need items, like gas for their car, etc. Some of those items might not seem like it is directly helping veterans, but it dramatically increases the community awareness of our organization so people know where to go for assistance.

Our Story

The VFW traces its roots back to 1899 when veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) founded local organizations to secure rights and benefits for their service: Many arrived home wounded or sick. There was no medical care or veterans' pension for them, and they were left to care for themselves. In their misery, some of these veterans banded together and formed organizations with what would become known as the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. After chapters were formed in Ohio, Colorado and Pennsylvania, the movement quickly gained momentum. By 1915, membership grew to 5,000; by 1936, membership was almost 200,000. Since then, the VFW's voice had been instrumental in establishing the Veterans Administration, creating a GI bill for the 20th century, the development of the national cemetery system and the fight for compensation for Vietnam vets exposed to Agent Orange and for veterans diagnosed with Gulf War Syndrome. In 2008, VFW won a long-fought victory with the passing of a GI Bill for the 21st Century, giving expanded educational benefits to America's active-duty servicemembers, and members of the Guard and Reserves, fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. In 1990, a group of local Nipomo veterans banded together to address the needs of our local veterans by founding Nipomo Post 10978. Since it's inception, the Nipomo Chapter has focused on helping local veterans and their families by providing assistance when needed. Additionally, our post has supported our local youth by providing scholarships every year to the winners of the Patriot's Pen and Voice of Democracy contests. The members of the post are well known within the community for pitching in and helping with community projects along with other community partners. We are committed to continuing our work and with the continued generosity of the Nipomo community, we will ensure that no local veteran is forgotten and their families are taken care of.
