Emergency Services will continue to monitor the weather throughout the evening until all current watches and warnings expire. Although it appears that the majority of today's threat has passed, we are grateful that the storms that seemed threatening bypassed us. Our climate is a complex entity, and while some individuals dedicate their lives to understanding it, I wonder if we will ever be able to accurately predict its behavior. For this reason, I am thankful that our tribal and clinic leadership reached out about the desire to open the clinic doors for those without adequate shelter. I am also deeply appreciative that our clinic security officer, Josh Saul, was willing to come in and provide assistance to help make this happen. The safety and security of the community is a collective responsibility, but we appreciate the efforts of those who are called upon during unique or rare events. Be safe. Jon

Do you know that Santee is covered by two NOAA offices, namely Sioux Falls and Omaha/Valley? The Omaha/Valley office is our primary point of reference, where the meteorologist compiles regional data to provide us with our forecast. If you monitor both Sioux Falls and Omaha, you may notice differences in their forecasts. These discrepancies arise from the distinct interpretation of available data at each office. This does not imply that either office is incorrect, but rather that they analyze the data from different perspectives. This highlights the importance of consulting multiple sources for news and weather information, especially when severe weather is forecasted. Stay safe today!

As a community, it is essential to emphasize that multiple information outlets are available during severe weather and emergencies. While social media provides considerable reach, it is not flawless. Therefore, please share this message with friends and family to ensure they receive the information as well. The following is the latest posting from the National Weather Service.

The clinic leadership, in coordination with the tribal council, has decided to open the clinic basement shelter if necessary. We will monitor the weather and post updates here if opening the shelter becomes necessary. If possible, please check in with friends and family who may be unable to move quickly or are otherwise unable to move to a safe location within their home. A safe location is defined as the lowest level of your home, away from windows and doors, such as basements or interior hallways. Stay safe, and stay informed through multiple outlets for up-to-date information.

Severe weather, tornado, thunderstorm, fire weather, storm report, tornado watch, severe thunderstorm watch, mesoscale discussion, convective outlook products from the Storm Prediction Center.

Today, the Santee Fire Department exemplified exceptional service. Despite the challenges posed by aging, outdated equipment, they successfully contained a house fire before the neighboring fire departments from Niobrara and Bloomfield-Lindy arrived on the scene. We are profoundly grateful that no lives were lost in this unfortunate incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family who suffered the loss of their home and belongings due to the fire. We would like to extend our appreciation to the Santee Police Department for their assistance and to the Nebraska State Fire Marshal for providing their expertise. We also thank the Santee Housing Authority for securing the structure. If any individuals or organizations have been overlooked, we offer our sincerest apologies. - Jon
