The more you know: Juneteenth Edition

Although the Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863, freedom did not reach every enslaved person immediately. Enforcement depended on Union troops reaching each state and community.
On June 19, 1865, approximately 2,000 Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that more than 250,000 enslaved African Americans were free. This day became known as Juneteenth.

Juneteenth is a patriotic federal holiday because it honors the ongoing expansion of freedom in our country. The more we know, the more we grow. ❤️🤍💙

We may have made an exception to the age requirement...

Mayor Henkel got a chance to try the Niceville Police Department's Impaired Driving Challenge and experience the Fatal Vision goggles firsthand.

While the course is only available to teens ages 14–18, he got a glimpse of how quickly simple tasks become difficult when impairment is involved.

The good news: there are still spots available for this Saturday's course at 9 a.m.

Parents, this is a great opportunity for your teen to learn an important lesson before they ever get behind the wheel.
