The more you know: Juneteenth Edition
Although the Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863, freedom did not reach every enslaved person immediately. Enforcement depended on Union troops reaching each state and community.
On June 19, 1865, approximately 2,000 Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that more than 250,000 enslaved African Americans were free. This day became known as Juneteenth.
Juneteenth is a patriotic federal holiday because it honors the ongoing expansion of freedom in our country. The more we know, the more we grow. ❤️🤍💙
