Lewiston Fire Company No. 2

Location: 2000 block of Saunders Settlement Road, Lewiston, NY
At approximately 10:53 AM on January 7, Lewiston Fire Company No. 2 was dispatched to a reported barn fire in the 2000 block of Saunders Settlement Road. Sanborn Fire Company was simultaneously dispatched as automatic mutual aid.
Upon confirmation of a working fire, the incident was immediately upgraded to a 2nd Alarm, bringing additional resources from the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station 914th Fire Department, Town of Niagara Active Hose , and Upper Mountain Fire Company .
Fire crews arrived to find the barn fully involved. Operations focused on protecting nearby exposures and a section of the barn that contained equipment.
Three officers from the Lewiston Police Department and NYS DEC worked under extremely challenging conditions to safely free the cows that were inside the barn.
The fire was brought under control at approximately 11:48 AM. The cause of the fire was investigated by the Niagara County Fire investigation team.
Lewiston Fire Company No. 1 stood by at Lewiston Fire Company No. 2 station with an engine to cover additional calls. Bergholz Volunteer Fire Dept was at Sanborn Fire Company to cover calls in their district, while Pekin Fire Company remained on standby at their station. These companies had their crews on standby for over 6 hours. Wendelville Fire Company later relieved Bergholz at Sanborn Fire Companies station until all crews cleared the scene and equipment was returned to service.
Mercy EMS had an ambulance on scene for over 6 hours, ready to assist.
Niagara Active Hose Fire Company cleared the scene and remained on standby at their station to assist with area coverage.
Also on scene were: Niagara County Emergency Services and Niagara County Fire Police
Excavators and a bulldozer were brought in to assist with the extensive overhauling to pull apart the thousands of bales of hay and straw to fully extinguish hot spots.
Crews cleared the scene at approximately 7:30 PM.
Firefighters spend several additional hours at the station washing, reloading hose and placing equipment back into service before returning home.
We would like to extend a special thank you to The Little Bakery on Saunders Settlement Rd for donating pizza to feed the hardworking crews on scene.
Also a huge thank you to the memebers that reported to our station to cook food to feed the crews when they returned back to the station.
The team work and coordination was tremendous and greatly appreciated.
