Yesterday, our town lost one of the greatest. Judge John Teixeira was well known through out Niagara County and was known by just about everyone in this small town. Judge “Tex” was a firm but fair justice. We all have stories about him. Troopers, Deputies, Officers and Lawyers could write a book about those memories we have with him. His work and volunteerism with our community will have a lasting impact.

Not many know this either, but he served as a Town of Niagara Police Officer for a period of time before becoming our Judge.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Jackie, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Two weeks ago, one of our officers located Cocoa the chocolate lab wandering down Lockport Road and brought her back to the station while we attempted to find her owner. Cocoa had escaped her handler, and her owner was out of town. Cocoa became immediately attached to our police clerk, Miranda McQuillan. Cocoa wouldn't leave Miranda's side, even when Cocoa's handler arrived, Cocoa ran and jumped into Miranda's lap. Because the handler could not show proof of ownership Cocoa had to go the SPCA until we could locate the rightful owner.

We did locate the owner and explained the course of events that transpired and how Cocoa immediately became attached to Miranda and the officers of the department. We proposed to the owner who travels out of town frequently, if he would be interested in allowing Miranda and her family to adopt Cocoa and become the Town of Niagara Police Departments therapy dog. And he agreed!

Cocoa McQuillan and Miranda will begin training for her therapy dog certification at the end of the month with WNYHeroes! Be sure to say hi to Cocoa when you see her at the Town Hall and at this summer's concerts and other town events!
