My colleague (and Harrisburg roommate) Rep. Bridget M Kosierowski is an amazing woman, mother, nurse, public servant legislator and friend. She (like me & so many others) is an example of how early detection saves lives.

She has an excellent prognosis because her cancer was caught early. She is in my thoughts everyday.

The biggest takeaway…get your mammograms! I know life is busy and sometimes something has to give, but it shouldn’t be your health.

Under Pennsylvania state laws (including Act 1 of 2023), supplemental breast screenings like MRIs and ultrasounds are covered at no out-of-pocket cost if you are classified as high risk and are enrolled in a state-regulated insurance plan. Act 1 of 2023 was one of the first pieces of legislation I voted on!

Today marks 11 years since the landmark Supreme Court decision in Obergefell v. Hodges ⚖🏳️‍🌈

This decision established that the fundamental right to marry is guaranteed to same-sex couples regardless of what state you live in. A true triumph of love and activism to make a more perfect union!

I’m happy to share another piece of good news coming from our session day yesterday; the House *unanimously* passed my legislation that would help PA become a leader in our growing pharmaceutical and biomedical industry!

House Bill 2162 is a bipartisan effort with Rep. Paul Friel (a D from Chesco) and PA State Rep. Thomas Kutz (an R from Cumberland County) that would make PA more attractive to companies focused on medical innovation, by simplifying our outmoded licensing process for the products (i.e. medications and biomedical devices) they create. It would permit them to apply for a temporary product license from PA at the same time they begin the FDA approval process, just like 41 other states allow.

There’s no medical, scientific or strategic reason for PA to keep imposing a delay on these innovators before they can launch treatments and make them available to patients who need them.

In fact, our lack of urgency in modernizing this rule is hampering our ability to attract these job-creating companies to the commonwealth. This is something we ought to get done if we’re serious about being a leader in the life sciences, an industry that saves lives while creating good jobs for local workers.

I’m hoping for swift progress in the Senate!

I would love to go into this summer knowing our hospitals are no longer in danger from private equity firms… wouldn’t you?

Today, with its passage out of the Senate Institutional Sustainability & Innovation Committee, we are another important step closer to enacting House Bill 1460 and preventing more hospitals from closing. I worked with industry & policy experts across the board to design the Health Systems Protection Act to keep private equity from destroying more of our healthcare systems as they line shareholders’ pockets – the culprit, as we experienced here in Delco, behind the greed that shut down Crozer Health.

It would work by giving the Attorney General’s office more oversight on transactions involving private equity firms and hospitals, putting a stop to harmful sale leaseback agreements.

Now, more than ever, communities of every size are at risk of losing access to lifesaving care. House Bill 1460 would finally give us the power to protect them.

We have Chair Farry to thank for bringing the bill up for vote in his Senate committee, and my gratitude to Chair Tim Kearney for his partnership in creating & advocating for this legislation.

In the House, we’ve been working on solutions to get your utility bills down while making sure utility companies generate the revenue they need to guarantee PA’s energy infrastructure can meet our demands (and yes, we’re keeping in mind that utility corporations are making record profits while we’re paying higher rates than ever).

We’ve also been taking steps to make sure those demands aren’t being overrun by AI data centers.

The Return on Equity Act (HB 2224) is shaping up to be one of those primary solutions. To put a complicated process as simply as possible: PA’s current system for determining the utility rates you pay delivers excessive profits to corporations & their shareholders. The level of profit utility shareholders can receive is called “return on equity” (ROE), and it’s the biggest driver of unfair rate hikes that generate profits for shareholders on our backs. PA has one of the highest ROE rates in the country.

Correcting PA’s outdated ROE wouldn’t touch the revenue utilities use for infrastructure upgrades or to pay the service workers who keep our power going – it would only prevent them from overcharging us to boost shareholder profits.

HB 2224 would ensure you pay what is absolutely necessary for safe and reliable service, and not a penny more, and I was proud to vote for its passage yesterday. It’s now in the hands of the Senate.

🐝Happy Pollinator Week!

🌸This week, we take time to spread the word about how we can protect our pollinators. They are the bridges of our ecosystems by transporting the necessary pollen from plant to plant in order to provide the necessary ingredients for plant life. Pollinators range from the bees in our gardens to bats, hummingbirds, and even ourselves.

The residents of the 168th are making a difference in our communities in so many ways. Last week, I was thrilled to welcome the 168th's own Leigh Ann Coary (center right), certified school nurse, and members of the Association of Professional School Nurses (APPSN) including President, Holly Verderame, and incoming legislative chair, Kayla Daugherty, to rally for House Bill 2285 to reduce the school nurse to student ratio (did you know it is currently 1:1500) and revise the reimbursement formula so schools receive proper compensation for the services they provide.

Students today have more complex medical needs. Our school nurses are managing much more than in the past and it is important they have the support they need to properly care for these needs. I am grateful to Leigh Ann for bringing this concern to my attention and I am thrilled to partner with our dedicated school nurses to work to bring about needed change!

“A dad is a gentle giant. Upon whose shoulders a child’s vision of the world takes shape.” This quote is on a picture frame my dad and mom gave Mark many years ago. As I’ve watched my boys grow, and been thinking about my daddy, I realize how true it is.

One of my favorite parts of this job is helping to encourage our young adults to become engaged in the governance process and to show them how they can make their voices heard. They are our hope for the future!

I was really excited to welcome three very talented and engaged students from the 168th to the Capitol this past session week.

Ethan Strain, our summer legislative intern from Middletown and rising sophomore at University of Pittsburgh joined me for a busy session day where we rallied for our school nurses and spent time learning about how we move legislation. Thank you, Ethan, for visiting and for all the work you are doing in our office to help your neighbors!

Harper Wyckoff and her mother Eve, also traveled to the Capitol this week where Harper, a Radnor resident and student, had the opportunity to meet with several of my colleagues as she lobbied for expanded Holocaust education in our schools.

We were also excited to welcome Lauren Greenberg and her mother Audrey, also Radnor residents, who came to the Capitol to discuss how the legislature can regulate the non-consensual use of photos to create damaging AI deepfakes and how we can better educate about the damaging impacts of AI when it is misused.

These young adults are already working hard to make a difference in their communities. Our young leaders make me so hopeful for the future.
