Today, for National Police Woman Day, we’re celebrating the women who serve our community through the Newton Police Department, including the three officers who serve in law enforcement and our Animal Control Officer, whose work often takes her out of the patrol car and into a very different kind of call.

From responding to calls and helping keep our community safe to supporting residents, spearheading community-based initiatives, caring for animals and handling the unexpected situations that come with the job, these women bring dedication, professionalism and compassion to their work every day.

Their roles may look a little different, but they share the same goal: serving Newtonians, both in human or animal form, who call it home.

Today on Patriot Day, we pause to remember the events of September 11, 2001.

We honor the lives lost, stand with their families, and pay tribute to the first responders whose courage and sacrifice inspired a nation.

September: Responsible Pet Owner Month

Our pets are family, and keeping them safe and healthy is a big part of caring for our community. Newton’s Animal Control Officer, Lyndsey Robinette, works closely with Caring Hands Humane Society to provide education, resources and support for pet owners- from helping reunite lost pets with their families to investigating animal cruelty cases and helping keep our neighborhoods safe.

Newton is home to more than just people and pets. We share our community with all kinds of wildlife, from deer and foxes to raccoons, opossums, skunks and plenty of other creatures that call Newton home, too.

So, what happens when wildlife wanders into your neighborhood?

The primary role of Newton’s Animal Control Officer Lyndsey Robinette, is supporting domesticated animals and their owners- including helping with lost pets, animal welfare concerns and other issues involving pets in our community.

When it comes to wildlife, the Animal Control Officer may become involved when an animal is sick or badly injured, or when it poses a danger to people.

But if a healthy wild animal simply happens to be hanging out in your yard or neighborhood, that’s usually just wildlife doing what wildlife does and you can let it be. In other situations, residents are encouraged to contact a pest control company or the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) Wichita Regional Office for guidance at 316-683-8069.

National Wildlife Day is a great reminder that wildlife is an important part of our community. and sometimes, the best thing we can do is give them a little space.

A 21-year-old Newton man is in custody for the attempted murder of his 2-month-old daughter.

The case originated from an emergency room visit on Aug. 26 for the child, who was immediately taken into police protective custody.

Newton Police arrested the baby’s father, Logan G. Dick, later that night. He is being held in Harvey County Detention Center on three separate charges of attempted murder stemming from different incidents of abuse, as well as aggravated endangerment of a child and obstructing apprehension or prosecution. Dick is being held on a $1.5 million bond.

The investigation is still in the early stages, and additional charges are possible as the investigation continues.
