United Way of Harvey and Marion Counties

United Way of Harvey and Marion Counties Mobilizing Harvey & Marion Counties, KS to advance health, youth opportunity, and financial stability.

Let's talk about housing in Harvey County.

Where we live shapes everything else, whether a young family can settle down, whether an employer can find workers who can actually afford to live nearby, whether our towns can keep growing in the years ahead.

This report digs into exactly that. It looks at what's available, what it costs, where the gaps are, and what opportunities exist to close them, giving Harvey County a clearer picture of where things stand right now.

This isn't a call to action just yet. It's a starting point: information residents, landlords, employers, developers, and community leaders can all use to have better conversations about what's next.

This week, we partnered with Healthy Harvey Coalition and Prairie View for Chalk It Out, and we couldn't think of a better way to wrap it up than with Newton, KS Police Department and Harvey County Sheriff's Office joining in. Our first responders picked up chalk to write messages of hope and encouragement outside the Law Enforcement Center.

First responders carry a lot, often while making sure everyone else is okay first. Reminding them that support goes both ways is part of why this partnership mattered to us this week.

Our local law enforcement also helped spread the word about the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline - because reaching out for help should never come with judgment, only support. Call, text, or chat 988, 24/7.

Thank you to Newton PD, Harvey County Sheriff's Office and Newton, KS City Government for taking part in Chalk It Out and helping remind our community: United is the Way.

WE'RE HIRING: Program Coordinator, Early Childhood Initiatives

Ask almost any working parent in Harvey County what's keeping them up at night and childcare will come up fast. It shapes whether families can take a job, whether employers can fill shifts, and whether kids start school ready to learn.

United Way of Harvey and Marion Counties is looking for someone to help us do something about it.

In this role, you'll:
πŸ“‹ Coordinate the Harvey County Child Care Task Force, bringing together providers, schools, employers, and local government
πŸ“š Run the Dolly Parton Imagination Library in Harvey County, getting free books into the hands of young kids
πŸ“Š Track childcare supply, demand, and gaps so our community can make smart decisions
🀝 Represent United Way at community events and support advocacy for childcare access and affordability

You'd be a great fit if you're organized, follow through, and know how to get people with different priorities pulling in the same direction. A background in early childhood, social work, nonprofit work, or community engagement helps (1 to 3 years of experience).

The details:
πŸ“ On-site in Newton, KS
⏰ Part-time, about 30 hours/week, with a flexible schedule
πŸ’΅ $17.50 to $20.00/hour, depending on experience
✨ Paid holidays and professional development

To apply, send your resume and a cover letter to [email protected]. Full job description in the comments.

United Way of Harvey and Marion Counties has been awarded a $50,000 Kansas Community Su***de Prevention Grant to launch Bridging the Gap, a project that trains the people communities already turn to first: library staff, faith leaders, teachers, first responders, and social service workers. The project is being carried out alongside the Healthy Harvey Coalition and partners across both counties.

Harvey County has one mental health provider for every 206 residents. In Marion County, that ratio is 1,299 to 1. This grant puts su***de prevention training and 988 resources directly into the places people are already asking for help.

September is Hunger Action Month.

Every month, Resource Navigation program connects neighbors across Harvey and Marion Counties to food when they need it, no judgment, no runaround, just a path forward. This work is made possible in part through our program partners, NMC Health and the Newton Public Library

Hunger doesn't always look the way you'd expect. It's a senior stretching a fixed income. A parent making sure their kids eat first. A neighbor who's never had to ask for help before. That's exactly why we're here: to meet people where they are and connect them to what they need.

This month, we're asking our community to notice, to speak up, and to show up for one another.
