Today’s heat has us throwing it back to another very hot day in June 2012! ☀️🔥

This photo shows Firefighter/Pump Operator Tim Sherrill arriving and beginning to set up operations at a barn fire in Vale, NC. The structure was already fully involved when crews arrived, but thankfully, the horses were safely out in the pasture.

With the nearest fire hydrant approximately 1½ miles away, crews established a tanker water shuttle, with multiple nearby fire departments and agencies working together to continuously haul water to the scene. When there isn’t a hydrant nearby, teamwork between departments becomes especially important to keep water flowing and firefighters operating.

It was a hot June day, an even hotter fire, and a great example of departments coming together when it mattered most.

🎉 Happy Birthday, Kathy! 🎉

Today we're celebrating one of our own! Please join the members of the Propst Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department in wishing Kathy a very Happy Birthday.

Kathy has proudly served our department since 2010, but her dedication began many years earlier as a member of our Ladies Auxiliary. Today, she serves as a firefighter, EMT, Secretary, and Treasurer, helping keep our department running both on and off emergency scenes.

Whether she's spending time with family, traveling to Tennessee, or enjoying a game of bowling, Kathy brings the same caring spirit and dedication to everything she does. We are grateful for her years of service and the many ways she contributes to our department and the community we proudly serve.

We hope your birthday is filled with family, laughter, and plenty of reasons to celebrate. Happy Birthday, Kathy! 🚒🎂

🎉 Happy Birthday, Andrew! 🎉

Today we're celebrating one of our own! Please join the members of the Propst Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department in wishing Firefighter Andrew Dixon a very Happy Birthday.

Andrew has proudly served our department since 2002 and, throughout the years, has held multiple officer positions. His dedication, knowledge, and experience have been a valuable part of our department for more than two decades.

Andrew also plays an important role behind the scenes by helping maintain our department's communication equipment, including our radios and pagers, helping make sure our members can stay connected when it matters most.

When he's not serving the department and our community, Andrew enjoys spending time with his family. We are grateful for his many years of service and all the ways he continues to contribute to Propst Crossroads.

We’re throwing it back to 2007 during a live fire training off Reepsville Road. Pictured are then-Chief Mike Weaver and Fire Officer Bradley Dixon communicating during the training exercise.

On the fireground, communication is critical. From coordinating crews and changing assignments to watching conditions and keeping everyone accounted for, clear communication helps firefighters work together safely and effectively. Training like this allows our members to practice those skills before they’re needed during a real emergency.

🔥 SUNDAY SAFETY CHECK: Extension Cord Safety 🔌

Extension cords are convenient, but using them incorrectly can create a serious fire or electrical hazard. A few quick checks can help keep your home and family safe.

Before plugging in, remember:
🔌 Don’t overload outlets or extension cords.
🔌 Replace cords that are frayed, cracked, or damaged.
🔌 Never run extension cords under rugs or furniture.
🔌 Use outdoor-rated cords for outdoor projects.
🔌 Unplug extension cords when they’re not in use.

Extension cords are designed for temporary use, not as a permanent wiring solution. If you regularly rely on one in the same location, consider having an additional outlet installed by a qualified electrician.

Take a minute today to check the extension cords around your home. A simple safety check can help prevent an electrical fire before it starts.

🔥 THROWBACK THURSDAY 🔥

This week, we’re throwing it back to some hands-on live burn training focused on propane fire emergencies.

Firefighters trained with a propane tree, allowing crews to experience the intense heat and conditions of a propane fire in a controlled environment. Crews practiced advancing hose lines and using water streams to control the heat and protect firefighters as they approached the propane source to safely shut off the fuel supply.

Training like this builds confidence, reinforces teamwork, and prepares our firefighters to respond safely and effectively when the real call comes in.

🚌 Sunday Safety Check: School Bus Safety 🚍

The first day of school will be here before we know it! As students head back to the classroom, school buses will once again be traveling the roads throughout our community. Whether you're driving to work, taking your children to school, or simply running errands, it's important to stay alert and help keep our students safe.

🚌 5 Quick Tips

🛑 Stop when the bus stop arm is extended
👀 Watch for children crossing the road
📵 Put your phone away while driving
🚸 Slow down in school zones
⏰ Leave early

Every child deserves to arrive at school safely and return home to their family at the end of the day. Taking a few extra seconds behind the wheel can make all the difference.

💬 5-Minute Challenge

Before school starts, take a few minutes to refresh yourself on school bus safety. This week, challenge yourself to slow down, stay alert, and be prepared to stop when school buses are picking up or dropping off students.

🔥 Throwback Thursday | April 21, 2007 🚒

Today’s throwback takes us back to a live fire training off Reepsville Road on April 21, 2007!

Pictured are Mike Cline, Troy Stallings, and David Garrison, three of the people working behind the scenes to help keep the scene safe. During live fire training, traffic control personnel play an important role in helping manage vehicle and pedestrian traffic around the training area, keeping access routes clear for emergency apparatus, and helping create a safer environment for firefighters, participants, and the public.

While the fire and firefighters may be what catches your eye, it takes a team filling many different roles to make training like this possible. We’re thankful for everyone who has helped keep our training scenes safe through the years!
