Move Over laws exist in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., for good reason. When officers and first responders stop on the side of the road, they are in one of the most dangerous situations they can face on the job. Passing vehicles that fail to move over put lives at risk every day.

Iowa law requires drivers to move over or slow down when approaching emergency vehicles, highway maintenance equipment, and other vehicles displaying flashing or hazard lights. When it is safe to do so, move to a lane that is not immediately next to the stopped vehicle. If you cannot change lanes safely, reduce your speed to match current road and traffic conditions.

The first Move Over law was passed in South Carolina in 1996 after a paramedic was struck and killed while responding to a crash.
Today, 19 states and D.C. extend these protections to construction, utility, trash, and disabled vehicles as well. Violating Move Over laws can result in significant fines or jail time, depending on the state.

The goal of the law is simple: keep people safe. When you see flashing lights ahead, move over.
