Today marks the 80th anniversary of the Line Of Duty Death of Edgar C. Bair, a three year member of the Newton Fire Department.

On May 24, 1946, Ed was the driver of an apparatus that was responding to the report of a bridge fire along the Missouri Pacific Railroad when the apparatus hit loose sand and rolled on U.S. Highway 81. Ed sustained multiple injuries in the accident. He succumbed to those injuries and passed away on May 30, 1946.

This morning, the Newton Fire/EMS Honor Guard and C-Shift crews paid tribute to Ed and the sacrifice he made, insuring that his sacrifice is never forgotten.

Many Newtonians experienced what felt and sounded like an explosion on Sunday evening, which became a bit of a wild goose chase for first responders and ignited much speculation online.

At around 8:45 Sunday night, we were dispatched to a possible structure fire at Fox Meadows Apartments on West 12th Street. A resident had reported smelling and seeing smoke. Our first unit arrived and found an electrical failure with the water heater.

Shortly after Fox Meadows was determined not to be a fire, dispatch started receiving reports of an explosion. Newton Police officers were searching, but the calls were coming from various locations.

During the search, someone reported visible flames at Prestressed Concrete. Police arrived first in the area and found the flames were actually a controlled burn at 3109 N. Anderson, which is outside the City limits but within our response area. Our units arrived and found the fire was pallets and railroad ties, which are not legal to burn. We spoke with the business owner and extinguished the fire.

The location of the possible explosion still has not been found. If anyone has any legitimate information about what happened or where, we would love to hear it.

During EMS Week, we thank the crews of Newton Fire/EMS for the skill, heart, compassion, and humanity they bring to every call and every person they serve because it is much more than just sirens.

It’s calming someone during the worst moment of their life.
It’s comforting a scared child, reassuring a worried family member, or helping someone simply feel safe again.
It’s carrying heavy equipment up flights of stairs, working long shifts through the night, and responding in every kind of weather imaginable.
It’s making life-saving decisions in seconds while showing compassion and professionalism in moments that are often chaotic, emotional, and unpredictable.

A single shift may include a major medical emergency, a car accident, a mental health crisis, or helping someone who simply has nowhere else to turn. No two calls are ever the same, but the dedication to serving others never changes.

Behind every response is a team of highly trained EMTs, AEMTs, and paramedics who continue to show up for this community day after day, holiday after holiday, and storm after storm.

The impact of EMS goes far beyond emergency response, and our community is stronger because of the people who answer those calls.

C-Shift responded to an injury accident South of Newton this morning. One patient was found pinned inside a vehicle in critical condition. Crews worked diligently to free the patient, using hydraulic tools to gain access. Upon extrication, the patient was transported by Eagle Med.

Newton Fire/EMS is incredibly proud to present to you Firefighter/Paramedics Kyle Soldani and Tyler Gehring! Yesterday, members of NFEMS gathered at Hutchinson Community College to show support for Kyle and Tyler as they walked across the stage and received their paramedic pin, officially marking the end to a grueling 16 month journey. In addition to their regular 24/48 schedule, they both balanced life at home being a husband and a dad with hundreds of hours of lecture, lab, clinical rotations, and field internship. Our Honor Guard was also there to Parade the Colors to kick off the ceremony! If you see either of these fine gentlemen out and about, make sure you give them a pat on the back and congratulate them on a job well done!

B-Shift responded to a structure fire in Royer West around 3:30 pm. Upon arrival crews found the home completely filled with smoke. The fire was located and extinguished but had already caused significant damage. No occupants or firefighters were injured during this incident. The cause of the fire was accidental.
