NARCOTICS ARREST ON SH 87

On Thursday, May 28, 2026, at 7:19 p.m., Sergeant Chad Ainsworth was patrolling State Highway 87 near County Road 4102 when he conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for a traffic violation. Sergeant Ainsworth identified the driver as Kristen Elizabeth Barrett of Kirbyville.

During the course of the traffic stop, Sgt. Ainsworth developed reasonable suspicion that criminal activity was occurring. He requested consent to search the vehicle, however, Barrett refused.

When Sgt. Ainsworth explained that he would be deploying K9 Rhino to conduct an open-air sniff of the vehicle, Barrett became belligerent and refused to follow instructions to step away from the car. Barrett then began walking back toward the driver’s door. Sgt. Ainsworth attempted to place Barrett in handcuffs, but she physically resisted. After a brief struggle, Barrett was restrained and placed under arrest for Resisting Arrest, Search, or Transport.

During a subsequent inventory of the vehicle, Sgt. Ainsworth located two baggies containing approximately 5 grams of suspected methamphetamine.

Barrett was transported to the Newton County Jail, where she was charged with Resisting Arrest, Search, or Transport-MA and Possession of a Controlled Substance PG1 >=4G

SABINE COUNTY MAN ARRESTED FOR DUMPING DOG IN NORTH NEWTON COUNTY

On Monday, May 25, 2026, at 8:47 a.m., the Newton County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to 702 Private Road 5022 (Scrappin’ Valley Lodge) in reference to animal cruelty.

At the scene, deputies obtained video evidence of Damon Lance Borel pulling up to the gate of Scrappin’ Valley Lodge, releasing a small dog from the cab of his pickup truck, and subsequently driving off, leaving the dog behind.

Newton County deputies presented the evidence to a Newton County Justice of the Peace, who issued a warrant for Borel’s arrest.

Due to Borel residing in Sabine County, the Sabine County Sheriff’s Office located and arrested him and transported him to the Sabine County Jail for Cruelty to Non-Livestock Animals-MA.

Sheriff Havard would like to express his appreciation to Sheriff Griffith and the Sabine County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in this case.

Sheriff Havard would also like to remind residents that cruelty to animals will not be tolerated in Newton County. If anyone is caught dumping animals, charges will be filed and those responsible will be held accountable.

Traffic Stop Leads to Seizure of Over $11,000 in Suspected Drug money on SH 12

On Friday, May 8, 2026, at approximately 8:38 p.m., Deputy Brent Sonnier with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on State Highway 12 East for a traffic violation.

During the course of the stop, Deputy Sonnier developed reasonable suspicion of possible criminal activity based on the driver’s statements and inconsistencies in his story. When Deputy Sonnier requested consent to search the vehicle, the driver refused. Sergeant Chad Ainsworth and K9 Rhino responded to the scene, where Rhino conducted an open-air sniff of the vehicle and alerted to the presence of narcotics odor.

A probable cause search of the rental vehicle was conducted, resulting in the discovery of bundles of U.S. currency totaling $11,270 concealed underneath the rear seat.

The driver stated he was traveling from Alexandria, Louisiana to his hometown of Richmond, Texas and claimed no knowledge of the money being inside of the vehicle. No arrests were made at the scene, however, the currency was seized pending further investigation. The Newton County Sheriff’s Office will seek forfeiture of the currency through the appropriate legal process.
