Earlier this afternoon, I was delighted to receive a phone call from Interim MassDOT Secretary and MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng informing us that the Newtonville Commuter Rail Station will remain open for full service throughout the duration of the upcoming new station construction project with the exception of (a) approximately three months beginning in early summer 2027 and (b) approximately two months in spring 2029.

This news is a tremendous relief to our community because the original plan for this project called for the station to be fully closed for over 2.5 years.

This was the culmination of collaboration and hard work by the MBTA and our city team, coupled with the extraordinarily impactful advocacy of our residents, businesses, and local, state, and federal elected officials. A special thank you to Congressman Jake Auchincloss, State Senator Cindy Creem, State Representative Amy Sangiolo, City Council President John Oliver, and Ward 2 City Councilors Susan Albright, Tarik Lucas, and David Micley.

You spoke, we listened, and together we worked to create the best possible outcome for Newtonville. We look forward to further updates from the MBTA. In the meantime, if you have questions about the project, please contact our team at [email protected].

Twenty-five years ago, we woke up in Newton to a beautiful, clear Tuesday morning in September.
Then the first plane hit the tower.
We watched in disbelief as the horror after horror unfolded on our television screens. The terror was palpable, giving way to a sadness that filled our collective souls as the deaths of innocent people from all walks of life became all too real.
And yet, amid the unimaginable evil, we saw something else. We saw courage. We saw compassion. We saw ordinary people do extraordinary things for complete strangers.
This evening, we hold close the families who continue to carry the weight of September 11, 2001 — including our neighbors here in Newton: the Bavis, Hackel, Humber, Jacobs, Meltzer, Ross, Salie and Toyen families, and so many others whose lives were forever changed by that terrible day.
Twenty-five years later, we know that time may change grief. It may shape it, but it does not erase it. So, this afternoon, we came together to honor those who were lost, to honor those who served, and to honor the families who have carried their loss for a quarter of a century. You are not alone. Your loved ones are not forgotten. We share your grief.
Twenty-five years later, we remember the fear and the outrage we felt. We remember the uncertainty. We remember the images that none of us can ever forget.
But we should also remember something else.
We saw the best of humanity.
Strangers reached out to strangers.
People opened their homes, their hearts and their arms to one another.
And for a time, something happened in this country that now can feel almost unfamiliar: Americans came together as one.
All Americans.
We understood that our shared experience of being American was bigger than our differences.
We understood that when our neighbors hurt, we hurt. And when our neighbors needed us, we showed up.
That is also part of what we honor tonight.

Federal Law Enforcement Actions Outside City Hall

Today, federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents conducted enforcement actions outside of the Newton District Court and then in front of Newton City Hall.

Based on the information we have at this time, ICE agents detained, and took into custody, an individual outside of the Newton District Court. Simultaneously, a motor vehicle driven by an acquaintance of the detained individual was followed away from the Newton District Court and was stopped by ICE agents in front of Newton City Hall. The acquaintance was then detained.

While this incident was unfolding, the Newton Police Department received a 911 phone call from a bystander alerting them to the incident at Newton City Hall. Upon arriving at the scene, the officers of the Newton Police Department maintained order and remained on scene until the detained acquaintance was released by the ICE agents and all parties dispersed.

I commend the response of our Newton Police Department and our City Hall staff. The efforts of our team were textbook across the board, and it is exactly the balance of professionalism and empathy that I know our community expects and appreciates.

Newton is a welcoming community and as such we pride ourselves in being a City that values every person.

I would like to express my strong support for our immigrant community. If you are an immigrant living, working, raising a family, running a business in Newton, or simply visiting our city, please know that we value you. We care about you, and you are part of our community.

UPDATE - The repair is complete and Dedham Street is now open.

Dedham Street is now closed between Bound Brook Road and Brush Hill Road while DPW crews repair a water main break. Traffic is being detoured until the work is completed.
