The Newton Appearance Commission recently presented Connie Roland with the Yard of the Month honor for the month of July.

Roland’s residence on South Coulter Avenue features a neatly trimmed lawn ornamented with a variety of rock and brick lined planting beds filled with brightly colored annuals and leafy perennials. The eaves of her front porch are adorned with hanging baskets overflowing with annuals that add an additional burst of color. A brick path leads around the side of Roland’s home to her back yard, which is dotted with mature trees and additional beds planted with hosta, liriope, and shade-loving perennials. A small pond filled with koi abuts the rear of the home, and its fountain fills the back yard with the peaceful sound of running water.

MAX CONNOR - May Yard of the Month
Max Connor lives on 20 1/2 Street in Newton. Max and his wife Peggy started their Rose gardens 40 years ago; Max said, when their son left home for college, there was a basketball court in the back yard which was the beginning of their Rose Garden. They expended it over the years all throughout their yard.

He started out with Jackson Perkins, and still has some today which he gives to friends and even roots some for special friends. He has multiple varieties and colors of approximately 40 rose bushes that are absolutely beautiful.. He and his wife retired from Southern Furniture.

His wife passed away in 2017, but every time he looks at the roses, he thinks about her and wishes she could be here to share in this Honor. He was nominated for this Honor by Joann Sigmon and other neighbors and received a $25 gift certificate for his hard work.

Do you know someone who deserves this Honor for the month of June? Contact either Sandra Waters at [email protected] or Sherry Sigmon at [email protected].
