If your home or property was affected by the July 2-4 storms and flash flooding, help is available this Thursday, August 20. Representatives from the U.S. Small Business Administration will be at the Jasper County Emergency Management Agency office, 1030 W 2nd St S in Newton, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with a final information session at 4 p.m. You do not need to own a business to qualify. Homeowners may be eligible for up to $500,000 to repair or replace their primary residence, and homeowners and renters may be eligible for up to $100,000 to replace personal property such as furniture, appliances, or vehicles. If you already submitted an application, SBA staff are still available to answer your questions in person. You can also apply online at lending.sba.gov, by email at [email protected], or by phone at 800-659-2955.

Newton Fire Department crews responded to a two-vehicle fire at 1250 N 11th Ave E early Monday morning, arriving to find both vehicles on fire. Investigators consider the fire suspicious, though no injuries were reported. Newton Police assisted at the scene, and firefighters remained on site until about 2:03 a.m. The fire remains under investigation.

Newton Fire Department crews responded to a structure fire late Saturday night at 311 W 11th St N. A person was still inside when crews arrived to heavy smoke and fire throughout the home. Despite life-saving efforts, the victim died from their injuries. One firefighter was treated at the scene for minor injuries and released.

Newton Fire was assisted by crews from Baxter, Colfax, and Kellogg, along with Newton Police and Public Works. The cause remains under investigation with the State Fire Marshal's Office.

Storms are possible in the Newton and Jasper County area this morning, with damaging wind gusts as the main concern. Isolated large hail and heavy rain are also possible. Storm chances are building across our area starting tonight and continuing through midweek. The Newton Fire Department wants residents to stay weather aware, especially overnight tonight into Tuesday morning, when strong wind gusts are the main concern. Isolated large hail and heavy rain are also possible. Additional rounds of storms are expected Tuesday night and Wednesday night, though how strong they get will depend on how earlier storms develop. The Des Moines National Weather Service has produced a weather briefing concerning the following hazardous weather.

* WHEN & WHERE - Heavy rain potential today with localized ponding and isolated flash flooding possible, mainly in urban areas. Severe risks will be over portions of central and eastern Iowa this afternoon.

Newton and Jasper County can expect rain and thunderstorms today. Heavy rain this morning could lead to isolated flash flooding, especially in low-lying or urban areas. A round of storms is possible this morning, followed by a break, then another round of storms this afternoon. The afternoon storms have the potential to turn severe, with a slight chance of a tornado and strong wind gusts, though the greatest severe risk is expected farther east and southeast of Jasper County. Winds will also pick up through the day, with gusts reaching 35 to 40 mph possible by evening. No other hazardous weather is expected over the coming week.

This week, Newton fire crews trained on vertical ventilation, a tactic used to remove heat, smoke, and toxic gases from a burning building. When crews cut a hole in the roof at the right time and place, it releases superheated gases that can top 1,000 degrees, making conditions safer for anyone still inside.

Crews practiced roof operations, tool use, and coordinating with the interior attack team to make sure ventilation happens safely and at the right moment. Done well, it improves visibility for firefighters, slows fire growth, and creates a safer environment for both occupants and responders.

Ventilation also helps limit heat and smoke damage throughout a building, which means less property loss and a more effective response overall. Training like this helps our crews stay ready to protect Newton homes and families.
