10 Years of Remembrance – Captain Bradley Long
Today, June 6, 2026, marks the 10th anniversary of the Line of Duty Death of Captain Bradley Long.

On June 6, 2016, Captain Long made the ultimate sacrifice while serving during an underwater recovery operation on Lake Norman. While assisting in the search for a missing swimmer as a member of Sherrills Ford-Terrell Fire & Rescue, Captain Long and two other divers experienced an emergency underwater. While the other divers were able to surface, Captain Long however did not and was later recovered. At the time he was 28 years old.

Captain Long dedicated his life and career to serving others. He began his fire service career as a junior firefighter at the young age of 14, later joining the City of Newton Fire Department in 2007. Where he transitioned to a full-time firefighter in 2011. In 2015 he was promoted to the position of Captain. Throughout his career, he earned the respect of his fellow firefighters and the community through his unwavering commitment, leadership, and compassion for others.

For those who knew Bradley remember his constant smile, his willingness to help anyone in need, and his passion for the fire service. His legacy continues to live on through the firefighters he mentored, the lives he touched, and the example of selfless service he set for all of us.

Today, we pause to honor not only a brother but a leader, a friend, and a hero. Despite having ten years passed, Captain Long's sacrifice and dedication to the citizens he served will never be forgotten.

Please join us in remembering Captain Bradley Long and keeping his family, friends, and all those who served alongside him in your thoughts today.

Captain Bradley Long – Forever in Our Hearts. Forever a Member of the Newton Fire Department Family.
