Today, on the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, we remember the lives lost, honor the heroes who gave everything to save others, and recognize the courage of first responders, service members, and everyday Americans who rose in the face of tragedy.

May we never forget the lives forever changed that day, and may we carry forward their legacy of courage, unity, resilience, and compassion.

City of Newton's offices and recreation centers will be closed on Monday, September 7, 2026, in observance of Labor Day. They will reopen on Tuesday, September 8, at 8 a.m.

Newton’s neighborhood parks—Northside/Broyhill, Southside, East Newton, Westside/Jaycee, Jacob Fork, Herbert M. Yount Memorial, Little Brook, and Chadwick—will be open from 6 a.m. to dusk as usual.

Sanitation collection will operate as usual. To ensure collection, Newton’s sanitation customers are reminded to place roll-out garbage bins at the curb no later than 6 a.m. on their assigned collection day.

The New State Cinema is celebrating 90 years in Downtown Newton!

Theater owners Alan and Suzanne Jackson and Brad and Patricia Haas hosted the community for a ribbon-cutting ceremony on August 28, celebrating the cinema’s 90th anniversary and new local ownership.

Since opening in August 1936, The New State Cinema has welcomed generations of moviegoers and become a beloved Downtown Newton landmark. Its new owners are carrying that legacy forward with upgraded sound systems, refreshed lobby and concessions areas, and recurring classic film series such as Silver Screen Sunday and Retro Rewind.

The City of Newton is seeking a dedicated Police Officer to patrol the community, respond to service calls and emergencies, enforce traffic laws, investigate accidents and criminal activity, and build positive relationships with the public.
