Lt. Monaco was a lifelong Newtonian who spent over 30 years of selfless service to the Town of Newton and surrounding community; a cop's cop with the rare ability to brighten anyone's day - regardless of how their day was going or how stressful the situation may have been.

May that legacy live on.

Providing EMS in Sussex County's busiest town is not an easy feat. While we spend a lot of our time out on the streets, we also have to spend a lot of time training!

Each year, Newton EMS holds an "annual meeting" at which all 113 members - either physically or virtually - complete their annual regulatory requirements including: bloodborne pathogen, respiratory protection, workplace safety, and anti-harassment training.

We also use this time to review the results of the year-end survey, discuss the goals for the upcoming year, and enjoy lunch with each other.

We regret to share news of the passing of Newton EMS Life Member and former Trustee William "Pudge" Hagaman.

Pudge was a life long Newtonian who came to us through his service at the Newton DPW. In the early 2000s, he was part of the inaugural class of municipal employees trained as EMTs and supplement the squad during high-volume operating periods.

Pudge furthered his involvement by becoming a formal member of the squad, taking a long time duty shift on Thursdays with Nora F., and serving as a five-year member of the Board of Trustees.

Pudge was as friendly, easygoing, and fun-loving as they come - providing the often much needed comedic relief or ice breaking joke when an event or meeting got a little tense.

He loved a long chat, doing any sort of odd project, and offering assistance when and wherever it was needed. He tried his best to do good deeds unto others strictly for the purpose of doing good deeds - without ever needing or wanting recognition.

He will be deeply missed by all.

Services will be held today from 2pm-6pm at Smith-McCracken in Newton.

Newton EMS is extremely proud of our Director, John-Paul Couce, for earning 2nd place in the National EMS Conference Simulation Competition, representing Atlantic Health System as an Advanced Life Support provider in Atlantic City, NJ.

John-Paulโ€™s commitment to excellence truly shined as he competed against teams from across the United States and rose to the top, securing a well-deserved 2nd place finish. Wow!

Newton is fortunate to have such an exceptional leader, mentor, and clinician guiding our EMS team. The residents of Newton are equally fortunate to have such an inspiring and highly skilled provider caring for the sick and injured in our community.

Congratulations, John-Paul, on this outstanding achievement and for continuing to inspire others through your dedication and professionalism!

Weโ€™d like to take a moment to recognize one of our own โ€” Kristen Brink, a Distinguished Life Member of Newton EMS.

Kristen dedicated over 15 years of volunteer service to our community, serving in multiple leadership roles and responding to countless calls for help. She gave her time, skill, and compassion to others without hesitation.

Now, Kristen is facing her own battle โ€” recently diagnosed with breast cancer. As she undergoes treatment and recovery, sheโ€™s also caring for her two children as a devoted single mother.

Weโ€™re asking our community to rally around Kristen the way she has always been there for others. Please consider donating or sharing her GoFundMe to help ease the financial burden and show her sheโ€™s not alone in this fight.

Kristen has given so much to Newton and Sussex County โ€” now itโ€™s our turn to give back.

My name is Vera Rumsey, and Iโ€™ve had the privilege of knowing Kristโ€ฆ Vera Rumsey needs your support for Support Kristen Brink's Fight Against Breast Cancer
