Here's a bit of an introduction to one of our newest patrol deputies, Kyle Ziegler.

Ziegler came aboard this past October. Previously, he was a military police officer in the U.S. Army, achieving E-5 sergeant rank. His tenure included a deployment in Kuwait and a rotation in South Korea. Serving in the Army and law enforcement ran in the family.

"I've wanted to do it since I was about 3 years old, and it just kind of led me to here," Ziegler said.

Ziegler grew up in Salina and later graduated from Wichita Heights. He is married, and is a father of one. In his spare time, he likes to get out to fish or play video games.

He wants to be seen as a deputy who is genuine, and who will seek to understand viewpoints of those he is called to serve.

"I really think that you can go to all the calls and deal with stuff and be a robot, but it really takes somebody special to be able to go there and be personable with somebody, and treat somebody how they'd want to be treated in that type of situation," Ziegler said. "I think that's a really big aspect, and also just being honest and truthful."

We're excited to have Ziegler out on the road for us. Give him a wave if you see him around!

Frolicking deer and cars going vroom don't pair well together. When we respond to a traffic accident involving a deer death, if time allows, we will contact interested Harvey County residents to allow them to retrieve the deer meat for personal use. It's a small silver lining in a bad situation.

If you'd like to be included on our rolling list of residents we contact, please fill out our Deer Meat Salvage Retrieval form: https://www.harveycounty.gov/advancedforms

*** Some disclaimers ***

These incidents are rare, but also unpredictable. You may be contacted for an opportunity to retrieve the deer meat at any time without notice. We don't attest to the quality of the meat retrieved through the salvage. You accept all responsibility for any damaged or diseased meat retrieved. The Sheriff's Office is not liable.

It's - Back 2 School edition!

Each Monday in May, we showcase the teamwork K-9 Max and Investigator Hinton. Max is a hard worker, but he also enjoys visiting local schools and community events to interact with kids and families. It allows people to ask questions and see that while dogs can be pets, a working police K-9 is a unique experience for our resident pupper.

K-9 Max has conducted numerous narcotics sniffs in his career, from job sites to schools to sober living facilities. Max and Hinton work locally and in neighboring counties - they're always willing to assist and be good community partners.

The duo is often out and about at community events, such as Sedgwick's Wild West Fest, children's activity groups and offering demonstrations. Max proudly partners with Big Show Fireworks for a yearly fireworks giveaway to raise funding to support our K-9 program.

While Max does a lot behind the scenes, we also want him to be visible in our community so we can educate about his role and the myriad ways he benefits us. We'll wrap up next week, but you can also follow Max's day-to-day routine at K-9 Max.

We'll be teaming up with law enforcement across Kansas for the Click It or Ticket campaign May 17 through June 1.

While seat belts aren't the only tool for safe travel, they are an important one. In 2024, more than 9,500 people killed nationally in traffic crashes were not wearing seat belts. Among those 18-34, 59% were not buckled up. Critically, seat belt use is influential - children are statistically more likely to wear a seat belt if the driver does.

While all traffic laws are monitored during this period, the emphasis on seat belts is meant to remind drivers and passengers that a simple choice can help protect them in an accident. As the weather improves and the Memorial Day holiday approaches, please travel safe and buckle up.

We held our Peace Officers Memorial Day ceremony today, gathering to remember and pay respect to our local law enforcement officers who were taken from us far too soon. Their legacies endure.

We are grateful for everyone who attended today's ceremony. We are ever thankful for the support we receive from our community members.

We're back with our next installment in our series, highlighting the work of K-9 Max and Investigator Hinton! Max and Hinton were honored as the K-9 Team of the Year for 2025 by the Kansas Narcotics Officers Association.

In 52 deployments this past year, K-9 Max and Hinton seized:

🐾 1.8 pounds of methamphetamine
🐾 4 ounces of co***ne
🐾 4.5 ounces of ma*****na
🐾 77 controlled substance pills
🐾 3 fi****ms

The fi****ms were discovered in evidence search deployments. Suspects had attempted to discard fi****ms by tossing them in open areas. Max found them all. One recovered firearm was linked to a homicide investigation in a neighboring county. Two other fi****ms were confirmed stolen.

Back in 2024, Max completed a vehicle sniff that uncovered 6 ounces of methamphetamine. That defendant was sentenced this past year to 13 years in prison for distribution, which highlights the long-term prosecutorial value of Max and Hinton's teamwork.

In 2025, Hinton was elected to serve as president of the Heart of America Police Dog Association, the organization which Max certifies with each year to continue to demonstrate his proficiency.

K-9 Max continues to wow us with his nose for sniffing out crime. He has proven his value countless times. We'll be back next week with more . Until then, you can also follow Max and Hinton's work at K-9 Max!
