Since assuming power in November 2012, Xi Jinping has participated in at least 15 engagements with the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN). He has inspected multiple PLAN units, including the Navy’s two nuclear submarine units; attended the commissioning of new naval vessels; visited the PLAN headquarters; and presided over two major fleet reviews.

Maritime Advanced Warfighting School staff and students, with the U.S. Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island, recently paid a visit to the USS Albany (SSN 753), Groton, Connecticut, and had a chance to go aboard during the class's professional military education trip.
The event provided MAWS students an opportunity to engage with the submarine force, deepen their understanding of undersea warfare, and connect operational-level planning concepts with fleet capabilities. MAWS develops officers and national security professionals prepared to serve as operational planners and leaders across the joint force.

Thirteen U.S. Naval War College (NWC) students – two teams of six and one solo officer – presented their responses to the Deputy Secretary of War and Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Advanced Research Challenge on May 25, 2026, at the war college’s Newport, Rhode Island, campus.

The 2025-26 Advanced Research Challenge was the fourth iteration of the program, calling for entries from all 19 military education institutions across the U.S. to respond to any of five prompts released in May of 2025. Each year, four winning projects are chosen to be presented to senior military leaders in Washington, D.C.

In the first three years of the challenge, four research teams from the Naval War College have been chosen as winners.

The U.S. Naval War College International Programs Department held a pinning ceremony for 108 students in its Naval Command College and Naval Staff College programs Sunday night, May 31, 2026, at Salve Regina University’s historic Ochre Court.
At the Sunday night pinning ceremony, 47 officers from 44 countries – including the U.S. – in the NCC program were pinned, marking their completion of the curriculum, while seven earned their master’s degree. Another 61 officers from 47 countries were pinned from the NSC program, with 15 earning their master’s degree.

The U.S. Naval War College conducted a previously scheduled active shooter preparedness drill today as part of its ongoing commitment to the safety and security of students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

The drill was designed to evaluate emergency response procedures, enhance coordination with local and federal first responders, and reinforce individual and organizational readiness in the event of a real-world emergency. No actual threat existed during the exercise.

Such drills are a standard component of the Naval War College’s comprehensive force protection and emergency management program. Regular training ensures personnel are familiar with established protocols and enables responders to assess and improve response capabilities in a controlled environment.

The Naval War College coordinated closely with local emergency services to ensure the exercise was conducted safely and with minimal disruption to the surrounding community. Normal operations resumed upon completion of the drill.

The Naval War College appreciates the cooperation and professionalism of all participants and first responders involved and thanks the community for its understanding as we continue to prioritize readiness and safety.

INS Lecture 10 - The Value of Spirituality and Religion for Readiness in the Profession of Arms

Close to 73% of active-duty military service members in the Department of War identify as people of faith. To ensure optimal force readiness, it is imperative that we understand how best to support this significant component of the warfighter.

This lecture introduces the personal and professional influence of spirituality and religion within the profession of arms. We consider the distinctions of spirituality and religion overall, how they are integrated among the Services, their unique contribution to readiness, and how they factor into the construct of Spiritual Readiness; that being the strength of spirit that enables the warfighter to accomplish the mission with honor. The lecture concludes with real-world examples of service members who lived out their beliefs in extremely dire circumstances.

A graduation for the International Maritime Staff Operator Course's latest class was held at the US Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island, May 19.
The IMSOC was jointly designed by the USNWC International Programs department and the College of Maritime Operational Warfare to prepare mid-grade international maritime officers, and personnel from other uniformed services and government agencies, to support the planning and ex*****on of complex maritime operations in a coalition environment.

Mexican Navy Director of the Naval War College at the Centro de Estudios Superiores Navales (CESNAV) Rear Adm. Jose Manuel Murguia Alvarado led a contingent of Mexican Navy officers and staff to the U.S. Naval War College (NWC) this week, at the Newport, Rhode Island USNWC campus, meeting with NWC President Rear Adm. Darryl Walker, touring the facility and discussing maritime security matters with resident subject matter experts.

Each year, the NWC International Programs (IP) department welcomes between 100 and 150 foreign officers to the U.S. from around the world to study strategy, warfare, decision making, and operational art. Since creating a program for international officers in 1956, the NWC has more than 5,500 international alumni from 145 countries worldwide.

IP offerings include the 11-month in-residence Naval Command College and Naval Staff College programs, for senior-level and mid-career international officers, respectively, as well as the concentrated five-month Maritime Security & Governance Course and the 11-week International Maritime Staff Operators Course.
Approximately 10 percent of the alumni from these programs have become chief of their country’s respective navy.

INS Lecture 9 - You Are Not Forgotten: POW/MIA Iconography and American Civil Religion since Vietnam

Across the United States—in military dining halls, veterans’ organizations, airports, schools, civic buildings, and even restaurants—the POW/MIA “Missing Man” Table has become one of the most recognizable patriotic symbols of American military remembrance. With its white tablecloth, empty chair, inverted glass, rose, candle, lemon, salt, and Bible, the table transforms ordinary objects into powerful symbols of sacrifice, absence, and hope.

This lecture explores the origins and evolution of POW/MIA remembrance in the aftermath of the Vietnam War, examining how POW/MIA bracelets, flags, and ceremonial tables became part of America’s broader patriotic landscape. Drawing on military history, religious studies, and the idea of American civil religion, the presentation considers how these ritualized objects incorporate older religious traditions, how they shape public understandings of military service and sacrifice, and why the language of “You Are Not Forgotten” continues to resonate in American public life.
