Dear Chief,

We are excited about the upcoming fundraisers for the Firefighters Association...and we have an incredible idea! Three words:

BIG ROCK TOURNAMENT

What do you think???

While we have everyone's attention, let's talk water safety for a second! This is the time of year where many are out on the water. A few things you can do to be safe out there include:

1. Make good choices. This includes staying hydrated, sober, and aware of your surroundings!

2. Have a plan! Taking a paddle board or kayak out on the ICW on the busiest day of the year (or with a storm approaching) is a quick recipe to meet a local fire and rescue crew. Be mindful of your surroundings. Wear your lanyard or MOB system. Let someone know where you will be!

3. Please, under no circumstances, EVER try to push a boat with the motor running. Likewise, with feet hanging over the bow. This is such an absolutely horrifying idea to those who have seen the injuries a propeller can inflict - one little slip can change everything.

4. Communicate early and often. If you think you are in trouble, thing someone is having a medical episode, etc - communicate your emergency so that services can get underway if necessary. Please also be prepared to offer major landmarks nearby - or better yet, coordinates, so that we can reach you quickly if need be!

We hope everyone has a safe and happy summer, and we will keep you posted on what Chief says about BGFD Watercraft 1 being on top of the standings next year at the Big Rock!!!

Yesterday at approximately 3pm, crews were dispatched to a 3-vehicle collision on Highway 24 in the vicinity of Blue Heron Dr.

Initial reports of multiple injuries were verified by crews arriving on scene, and an additional medical unit was requested from the Western Carteret Fire Department. The extent of the damage and the dispersion of the accident caused major delays while crews addressed the needs of the injured.

At 16:32, crews cleared the scene and reopened all lanes of traffic.

As always, we remind our neighbors and community that while the delays of an accident may be inconvenient, it is likely that others are experiencing a life changing moment. Please be patient, drive safely, and remember to slow down and obey signals if and when passing an emergency scene.

06/11/2026

Update: Crews have cleared the accident scene. Please drive carefully.

Please exercise caution and anticipate delays in the vicinity of Hwy 24 and Blue Heron Drive due to a motor vehicle collision.

Have you ever seen an egg fly?

This morning, BGFD had the opportunity to visit Broad Creek Middle School for the annual egg drop. Students tested their ability to design a safe landing pod for the eggs, with our firefighters dropping the eggs from 50 feet above to see if the eggs could land safely. Some made it! Some did not...

*IMPORTANT UPDATE FROM THE CHIEF*

This past week our County Commissioners passed an ordinance for open burning (vegetative materials) within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling.

Manmade / manufactured materials are always illegal to burn. If pickup is available in towns, vegetative materials are usually not allowed to be burned.

In the counties jurisdiction you can burn vegetative materials that generate on your property without a permit within 100 feet of your residence.

However, if the burning is within 100 feet of an another's occupied dwelling, the person doing the burning is required to get permission from their neighbor.

We were seeing issues in close subdivisions in the counties jurisdiction where smoke was a real nuisance to folks, thus the new ordinance.

If the fire department is called to a residence where burning is a nuisance to individuals the following steps will occur.

Education on the policy will be offered.

Neighbors written permission will be required if this is an issue.

Fines can be civil and criminal.

The fire may be extinguished, depending on the findings.

Should the burning reoccur, the Sheriff's office or Fire Marshal will write civil citations. The Sheriffs Office can now write criminal citations as warranted.

This ordinance does not apply to BBQ Grills or recreational fire pits like those purchased at Lowes and Wal-Mart etc. as long as they meet the dimensions.

This ordinance does not apply to farmers burning fields as described in the ordinance.

Everyone is up in arms about this bear. All we have to say, is he's a good guy. Bad breath, but a good guy. Even helped pull a raccoon out of a log when it got stuck once.

This afternoon, crews from Broad and Gales Creek, County Medic 3, Newport, Morehead City, and Western Carteret were dispatched to a possible structure fire on the eastern edge of our first due area.

A resident initially reported hearing a loud pop inside the house before seeing smoke and flames in the house, and evacuated immediately - a very smart decision! Heavy smoke was reported by units en route, and BGFD crews arrived to find heavy fire at the front door. After an aggressive initial attack, repositioned to further surpress the fire. A search of the interior discovered a family pet, which was revived with the help of firefighters and County Medic 3.

All crews were returned to service after approximately 90 minutes on scene. This emergency was a great reminder to get out quickly and call 911 immediately! As always, a big thank you for the outstanding support to our mutual aid departments and our medical team.

"Take more pictures with the crew."

These past few years, BGFD has decided to write the next chapter of protection. Showing up, bringing in new blood, increasing and improving training - all things that matter. When someone shows up to volunteer, they need to know that they have a place, they have a path forward, and they are valuable.

This month we had the opportunity to conduct a series of small training fires on a house which had been donated for the purpose of destruction. New and seasoned firefighters had the opportunity to practice various techniques, test new equipment and apparatus, and work together in a controlled and monitored environment. On conclusion of the training, the home was set ablaze, as was well recorded and reported on many local pages.

Behind the scenes, many individuals spent countless hours ensuring safety standards were met, materials were in place, the house was properly prepared, and all permits were obtained. For all your work, the time away from the family the meetings, and the years spent developing your skill set and expertise - you guys challenge us to be the best!

We were also fortunate that local photographer Kenn Phillips also donated his Saturday to record this event for us. Here are some of the highlight photos - we will share more as the year goes on!

BGFD and County Medic 3 responded to reports of a multiple vehicle collision on May 27th at approximately 1753.

Responding units arrived to find four vehicles that were involved in the collision, and multiple patients requiring further evaluation and medical care. Newport Fire assisted with additional ambulances for transport, while vehicle traffic was redirected to maintain reasonable traffic flow.

The teamwork and coordination from yesterday's crew allowed patients to be evaluated and assisted from their vehicles, traffic to maintain forward motion, and the highway to be returned to use, all in less than an hour. This couldn't have been possible without additional helpfrom the Carteret County Sheriff's Office and NCSHP.

We are grateful for the volunteers that offer their time to help take care of the community, and will once again remind those who are cutting through neighborhoods to be mindful of local speed limits.

As always, drive safely and buckle up!
