As seniors finish their exams we want to take a moment to say thank you all for your support for our students, The Seaside Cafe, and the Newport Area Career & Technical Center Culinary Arts program as a whole. As the students have spent four years in our kitchen, they have found areas in which they excel. They have come to better understand customer service, teamwork, and the importance of proper preparation. Some students have even found the zen of doing dishes. They have all learned experiences they didn't expect and in some cases didn't want. There is a pot with a burnt hole in the bottom that our seniors have displayed as a medal of honor. The final sale of the year saw the students making more than 1,200 scones without the bat of an eye. Their confidence and dedication is fantastic.

We are proud to help our students get jobs both long and short term. Look for our students at the beaches, in the hotels, and your favorite restaurants, and coffee shops. Know that the kitchens all around you have both current and former students working hard to bring you wonderful food.

CTE, career and technical education, is very important to so many students. For some students it is the motivation to come to school. This year we have heard about a salon opened by one of our cosmetology graduates, cybersecurity students who will be graduating Rogers High School with both their high school and Associate's degrees at the same time, graphic design & marketing students who are already social media coordinators, the newest fifth ward cafe's chef is one of ours too. Our JROTC program earned the title of Honor Unit of Distinction. The carpentry and arts programs worked together to create a Wish House for a child fighting illness through Rosemary's Wishes. The automotive program took tops in the state electric vehicle competition. CTE is giving them a head start and helping them build their resumes with both certifications and practical experience. Our programs are constantly asked by local businesses if we have students ready to join their teams because they value the education and training they receive here at NACTC. It is great to know that you value them too.

Thank you for your support! Have a wonderful summer. We look forward to seeing you all in the fall.

The Students and Staff of The NACTC Culinary Arts program and The Seaside Cafe

Last month, Rogers High School students joined a delegation of Newport officials on a visit to our sister city of Shimoda, Japan. Our students were a wonderful representation of Newport throughout the visit, staying with host families and presenting artwork for the Shimoda Black Ship Festival. What a fantastic opportunity to learn first hand about other cultures and to continue our more than 50-year sister city partnership with Shimoda!

Throughout the school year, Frank E. Thompson Middle School Principal Dr. Michael Browner, Jr. has been working with 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Principal Advisory Councils to teach important leadership skills and ensure students have a voice in their school. Last week, Grade 5 and Grade 6 Principalโ€™s Advisory Council students had the opportunity to visit Claiborne Pell Elementary School to help Pell students with math and to share what itโ€™s like to be a TMS student. What a great example of peer-to-peer leadership!
