Meet the Year 2 Health Sciences students of 2027! The first year of Health Sciences was focused on exploring different clinical environments that tested interests in authentic health-care settings across multiple postsecondary pathways. All this in addition to a semester of Human Biology.

In the second year of the program, students further define post-secondary plans by pursuing certification as an entry level Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA) or delving into Lifespan Development Psychology (LDP).

LNA preparation focuses on occupational skills, clinical experiences, and preparation for LNA licensure. The LDP concentration examines physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development from infancy through adulthood, and offers a Human Growth & Development college class. Both concentrations offer a Medical Terminology college level class.

Animal & Environmental Systems Science students are beginning their work at Spring Brook Farm in Westfield and perhaps the broad smiles say it all. Field placements build the foundation on which learning finds its truest form, but also provide important community connections and enrichment for students. Thanks to Seb Latraverse, Owner/Operator of Spring Brook Farm for once again hosting this year's class: Ivy Arant, Gracie Cross, Conner Eidson, Aaliyah Grady, Olina Hastings, Olivia Houghton, Aubrey Jacobs, Reegan Kelley, Kassie Koehler, Payten Lathe, Abigail Loomis, Chloe Mead, Jaida Poutre, Ava Smith an last but never least Emily Dehoff, Instructor.

Daniele Jaminet has been a vital part of North Country Career Center's Introductory classes for several years, having taught Intro to Culinary Arts, Marketing and Career Pathways. This year she has found her true passion as the Baking and Pastry Arts Instructor; a one-year concentration within the Culinary Arts Program. The complementary one-year concentration is Professional Cooking. Students can focus on one concentration or take both over two years. Flexible pathways make engaging, individualized experiences tailored to interests, skill sets and post-secondary dreams!

The work has begun and in NCCC programs and PTF classes it all begins with safety 24/7; in labs, with human and animal clients and patients, with supplies and equipment, with confidentiality, on job sites, in community field placements, at Work Based Learning sites - actually everywhere!

First year Welding students are currently earning entry to live work in the lab upon completion of an OSHA 10 course. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is essential and includes jackets, gloves, welding helmets, protective pants and footwear and safety glasses. Here's to a safe and productive year across the center!

The SkillsUSA annual 'Drop & Shop' is fast approaching! This is a great event that NCCC students organize and run to benefit our community.

DROP DAY Friday, OCT 2:
WHAT TO DROP - Gently used, clean clothing (no undergarments or footwear)

WHEN TO DROP - Drop off will begin no earlier than 8:30 am - 6 pm, Friday Oct 2nd at the student drop off in the NCUHS parking lot (north end of the campus at 209 Veterans Avenue, Newport)

SHOP DAY Saturday, OCT 3:
All community members are welcome to 'shop' from 8 am - 1 pm.

Today NCCC welcomed the incoming 9th grade students to our Pre-Tech Foundation (PTF) introductory classes. Check out the amazing new mural in Frank Carbonneau's classroom - 11th grade student artist Ella Cunningham has created a mural that celebrates the art, skill and craftsmanship of Mr. Carbonneau's Woodworking, Construction, Metal Working and Wiring & Plumbing PTF classes. Her work reflects the precision, problem solving, and pride in designing and building across the many pathways of the skilled trades.

NCCC hosts hundreds of students each semester in eleven introductory classes (Animal Science, Environmental Conservation, Culinary Arts, Career Pathways, Prototyping and Technology, Game Design and Coding, and Engineering with CAD in addition to the aforementioned four skilled trades classes).

60 Union Street Update: This summer, North Country Career Center, Newport Downtown Development and the Vermont Community Loan Fund joined forces to provide five local CTE students 126 hours of on-the-job paid experience.

Jeremy Broe, NCCC Building Trades Instructor led the crew of Elijah Baker, Eoin Comes, Ryan Farrand, Hailey Foreman and Jeremy Glodgett in assembling 3 stories of scaffolding in finishing the roof, preparing the interior for a new floor plan and heating system, and prepping door & window frames - fantastic progress!

Students sharpened their communication skills, conquered a steep roofing job, leveled up the building and through weather challenges and the ever changing landscape of a complete remodel, kept moving forward.

It’s amazing to see what happens when our community invests in the next generation of tradespeople. Way to go, crew! 👏🎉

PCB contamination is an issue affecting a number of older school buildings across Vermont.

After elevated PCB levels were discovered at Burlington High School in 2020, the state began requiring testing in schools built or renovated prior to 1980. As testing has continued, more than 15 Vermont schools have been identified with elevated PCB levels in building materials or indoor air.

At NCUHS, PCB contamination is associated with fire caulking used around windows and ductwork prior to 1980. Over time, contamination has spread to ventilation systems.

We have needed to limit the use of some educational spaces with identified and remediated PCBs. Reuse of the buildings would tie the school district to annual testing costs in perpetuity.

Last week, NCUHS and NCCC welcomed area lawmakers for a tour of the campus to highlight the ongoing impact of PCB contamination, the progress made through remediation work, and the broader infrastructure needs facing our school community.

Leaders at North Country Union High School invited area lawmakers to tour the Newport campus this week, highlighting ongoing challenges after the school was forced out of its building in 2024 due to elevated levels of PCBs-- and broader concerns about an aging facility.
