This evening Retired Sheriff of Knox County, passed away after a long battle of sickness. In Cocke County, Sheriff Spangler was known for his commitment of sending the Knox County Aviation Department to our community in September of 2024 to rescue victims from Hurricane Helene. His crew did not leave our county until all verified rescues were successful. He sent 8 to 10 patrol deputies each day to assist our agency in answering calls of service, shutting down roads, and taking care of whatever else we needed. He will be missed. Our prayers go out to his family during this loss.

UPDATED TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT
From 2:00 pm till 9:00 pm deputies worked traffic enforcement. Speed limit on this road is set at 35. Speeds range from 49 to 64 mph. Deputies produced the following:

37 traffic stops
29 speeding infractions
2 failure to maintain lane
1 driving on revoked
1 distracted driving
1 expired tag
1 improper display
1 failure to obey traffic device

Traffic safety is vital on our roads and these speed limits are set for the safety of each driver.

Hartford Road is experiencing heavy traffic congestion. We have called in 2 deputies that will stay on Hartford Road for traffic safety and to direct traffic as much as possible to keep it moving. Interstate 40 has seen several backups over the last few hours due to the high traffic volume from Labor Day Holiday.
