⭐ Promotion week at SWSC⭐

This week, SWSC proudly held several promotion ceremonies honoring outstanding students and staff members advancing to their next rank. From the Advanced Division Officer Course (ADOC), we congratulated newly promoted LTs Davies and Forgione. From the Prospective Executive Officer (PXO) course, we celebrated the promotions of CDRs Boily and Bower, as well as CAPT Miller. Additionally, SWSC staff celebrated the promotion of CDR Poyer from SWSC's Officer Engineering Training directorate (N74). Congratulations to all!

Promotions across both our student pipelines and instructor cadre underscore the continuous professional growth and dedication driving the Surface Warfare community. Whether preparing for critical division-level leadership, stepping into senior command roles, or mentoring future warfighters on our staff, these newly pinned officers embody the sustained excellence required to lead Sailors and maintain Fleet success worldwide.

⚓⚽ From the pitch to the bridge! ⚽⚓

Yesterday, Rhode Island FC players Noah Fuson and Nick Scardina, along with club staff, visited Naval Station Newport, Rhode Island for a tour of Surface Warfare Schools Command - SWSC and the U.S. Naval War College. During their stop at SWSC, they stepped inside SWSC's Full Mission Bridge simulators to test their hand at navigating a virtual warship and spent time chatting with Sailors about life in the Navy and the Newport community.

Connecting with local organizations across Rhode Island is vital to fostering strong community relations and mutual support throughout the Ocean State. Engagements like this offer our neighbors a firsthand glimpse into the training environment in Newport, while allowing our Sailors and local professional teams an opportunity to share experiences, build lasting relationships, and celebrate the shared values of teamwork, discipline, and pride in our local area.

⚓👏 Proven leaders shaping the Surface Fleet👏⚓

Earlier today, SWSC celebrated the promotion of two outstanding staff members to the rank of Captain: Capt. Michael Chesnut, Director of Mariner Skills Training (N72), and Capt. Kyle Hickman, Director of the Senior Officer Ship Material Readiness Course and Command Assessments (N75). Reaching the rank of Captain is a distinguished milestone, reflecting years of proven operational excellence, tactical mastery, and sustained superior performance across the Surface Force.

Having leaders of this high caliber on our staff is essential to SWSC’s mission. By staffing our schoolhouses with premier senior officers who bring extensive sea-duty experience, we ensure that our students receive world-class mentorship and curriculum oversight. Congratulations to Capt. Chesnut and Capt. Hickman on this well-deserved achievement as they continue to shape the future readiness and lethality of the Fleet.

⚓ Aligning strategy with deckplate leadership ⚓

Earlier today, SWSC hosted Admiral James Kilby, Vice Chief of Naval Operations. During his visit, Adm. Kilby met with command leadership and spoke directly to SWSC's department head and senior officer students, sharing his strategic guidance and expectations for the future commanders and leaders of the Surface Fleet.

Visits from the Navy's most senior leadership are incredibly important to SWSC leadership and students, as they provide a direct line of sight into the Chief of Naval Operations' strategic vision and warfighting priorities. By engaging in these candid discussions, our prospective department heads, executive officers, and commanding officers gain the critical strategic context needed to translate high-level Navy goals into lethal, ready, and resilient watchsections on their future warships.

⚓🌊Bridging the gap between the schoolhouse and the deckplates🌊⚓

Yesterday while in Norfolk, SWSC Commanding Officer, Capt. Vic Sheldon, went onboard USS Gettysburg (CG 64) to meet with leadership and speak directly with the ship's officers. These shipboard visits are vital for SWSC, providing our leadership with direct, unfiltered feedback from Surface Warriors on how our training curriculum translates to the operational needs of warships currently in the Fleet.

For the officers onboard USS Gettysburg, this engagement offered a unique opportunity to discuss career development, share tactical deckplate insights, and align their shipboard experiences with SWSC’s evolving educational pipelines. By maintaining this continuous loop of communication between the schoolhouse and recently-deployed crews, we ensure that SWSC remains fully responsive to the real-world demands of the modern Surface Fleet.

⚓🔥Strengthening warfighting readiness at the SWSC Norfolk schoolhouses🔥⚓

This week, SWSC Commanding Officer, Capt. Vic Sheldon, visited Mariner Skills Training Center Atlantic and Farrier Firefighting School in Norfolk to meet with leadership, staff and students. As vital components of the SWSC domain, these schoolhouses provide the realistic training necessary to prepare Sailors for the unpredictable challenges of life at sea, from navigating complex waters to combatting shipboard damage.

These Norfolk command visits are crucial for ensuring our foundational safety and mariner training programs remain fully aligned with the evolving operational demands of the Fleet. By focusing on critical skills like damage control and ship-handling, Capt. Sheldon and the MSTCLANT/Farrier teams are directly reinforcing the baseline resilience and technical competence that keep our warships combat-ready and our crews safe.
