Friends of Yaquina Lighthouses

Friends of Yaquina Lighthouses A non-profit working to support the conservation of Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area through preservation, education and appreciation.

Friends of Yaquina Lighthouses (FOYL) is a non-profit organization with a mission to aid in the restoration and preservation of Yaquina Bay and Yaquina Head Lighthouses and their surrounding areas and to interpret their natural and cultural histories. We are always looking for enthusiastic members and volunteers, so if you'd like to join us as we strive to achieve our goals please contact us at 54

1-574-3129 or [email protected]. We work in partnership with the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department and the Bureau of Land Management as the public agencies which own and operate the Yaquina Bay State Park and the Yaquina Head Oustanding Natural Area. At each lighthouse FOYL operates an interpretive store carrying merchandise relating to the site themes of the lighthouses and their keepers, maritime and local history, marine mammals, birds and other wildlife, hiking, biking, beachcombing etc. All proceeds from these stores go to fund restoration or preservation projects or interpretive programs at each lighthouse. FOYL also hosts events throughout the year including an annual meeting in June, a celebration of lighthouse month in August, National Public Lands Day in September, Halloween and Christmas open houses and an annual Restoration Benefit in January.

Tell us, are you pro-Cowbird or anti-Cowbird? Here at Yaquina Head Interpretive Center we have had one Brown-headed Cowbird (we shall call her Matilda, we know... don't name wild animals) visiting for a couple of weeks now.
Females put their energy into egg production, sometimes laying more than 3 dozen eggs a summer. They lay in the nests of other birds, leaving their young to be raised up by other birds, usually at the expense of some of the host's own chicks.
Matilda may be checking out potential nests, or maybe she just really likes the bird dots on our windows that are in place to protect all birds, including herself.

It sure feels good to be home! Yaquina Head is back where it belongs. However, it does miss it's little friend the Big Blue Bear of Denver. Standing at only 40 feet he is pretty small compared to Yaquina Head's 93 feet. Maybe they can be pen-pals? Until the next adventure...
