🌊 King Tide Alert! 🌊
We're coming into King Tide season, and today and tomorrow's high tides are expected to be almost 1 foot above normal.

As we've seen over recent years, rising sea levels are directly impacting Newport's historic waterfront, we're once again joining with MyCoast to ask the public to (safely) take photos of high tides and upload them through the MyCoast App.

With sea level rise expected to accelerate over the coming years, documenting high tides around Aquidneck Island help researchers study coastal flooding and aid in the planning and actions that we can take towards building more coastal resilience.

This year's King Tides are listed below, alongside their anticipated height above normal high tide:

🌊 ⚓️ 🌞 Whether you’re looking to get out on the water or just looking at the view, you really can’t do better than King Park.

As a reminder, restrooms are located mid-park and are open May 15 - October 15 and while the waterfront is unguarded it’s a beautiful spot to enjoy the sand and breeze.

📣📣📣 We’re thrilled to be welcoming back the Providence-Newport Ferry to Perrotti Park for another season!

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation began the service in 2016 to provide an alternative to automobile travel between the two cities, which avoids the congestion, cost, and hassle associated with driving and parking while also reducing vehicle emissions. To date, over 300,000 passengers have ridden the ferry.

Seastreak again will be the operator this year of the ferry Ocean State and the cost to ride the ferry remains unchanged from last year: $12 each way for adults, and $6 each way for children, seniors, those with disabilities, and Medicare cardholders. Bikes and pets are allowed aboard for no additional charge. Free parking is available in the Providence terminal.

If you're coming into town from up the bay, don't forget that you can get around town FOR FREE by using RIPTA's FREE SHUTTLE SERVICE all summer long (www.ripta.com/newport) .

This year's ferry season will run through Columbus Day weekend. Service to Bristol is part of the trip to and from Newport and will operate on weekends through Labor Day weekend. RIDOT also will run special ferries for those going to the Bristol Fourth of July Parade.

Tickets are available online at www.RideTheBayRI.com or by calling 1-800-BOATRIDE. Those departing from the Newport ferry terminal at Perrotti Park, 39 America's Cup Ave., or the Bristol ferry terminal at the Bristol Maritime Center, 127 Thames St., can buy their tickets online or on the boat.

🌞 🌊 📆 Stretching across a fragile saltmarsh with Ballard Park to the north and Ocean Drive to the south, Hazard Road is one of Newport's most idyllic roadways. It's also one of the most vulnerable.

A mecca for birders, walkers, cyclists, and kayakers, the road was raised to allow for greater water flow in 2009 as part of a long-term marsh rehabilitation project with Save The Bay.

Now, more than 15 years later and in anticipation of continuing rising sea levels, we're looking again to the future.

Over the last year, the City has been evaluating the feasibility of modifying the roadway to limit vehicular access through the salt marsh year-round and replacing the asphalt road surface with a permeable vegetated surface.

If you'd like to learn about the challenges facing Hazard Road and share your thoughts about a potential solution, please be sure to join the City's Energy and Environment Commission on Wednesday, June 17th at 6:30 p.m. in the Friends Meeting Room at the Newport Public Library to hear a presentation from Scott Wheeler, the City’s Superintendent of Parks, Grounds & Forestry, and Wenley Ferguson, Director of Restoration at Save the Bay.

The City has received a feasibility grant from the Rhode Island Infrastructure Bank for the restoration of Gooseneck Cove to support this effort and we'd love to know your thoughts.

As always, the meeting is open to the public and all are welcome to join.
