City of Newport, MN

City of Newport, MN Newport is primarily a residential community and its strength is the people who live within the city. Paul and Minneapolis.

Newport is a small river community with residential streets bordered by large trees, which wind their way along the river's edge and the blufflands. Newport's small town persona is retained within its people and its physical environment even though it is within a 15 minute commute to St. With a population of 3,435, Newport continues to encourage growth and development within the community.

Fairview EMS Transition Approved by State

Last Friday, August 21, 2026, Fairview EMS notified us that the Minnesota Office of Emergency Medical Services (OEMS) had officially approved Fairview EMS to provide primary ambulance service to Newport and St. Paul Park. This approval is the final step in moving Newport and St. Paul Park into their ambulance service area and completes the State’s process. As anticipated, this change will take place September 1. Fairview, Cottage Grove, and Washington County dispatch will work together to ensure a smooth transition.

Fairview EMS already provides service to several nearby communities including Eagan, Rosemount, Inver Grove Heights, Mendota Heights, West St. Paul, South St. Paul, Sunfish Lake, Lillydale, and Coates.

While Fairview EMS is headquartered in St. Paul, they operate ambulance “bases” throughout their service area. Ambulances are positioned based on current and anticipated call volume. Newport City Hall/Fire Station will be an available base location as needed.

Response Times

There was a question earlier about Fairview EMS response times. The latest quarterly numbers show their average emergent response time (generally, calls requiring lights and sirens) was 7 minutes and 28 seconds across its service and mutual aid areas. They report an average non-emergency response time of 8 minutes and 7 seconds. This is measured from the time they are notified by Washington County dispatch to arrival on scene.

Meet the Team

Fairview EMS will be at the Fire Department Booya on Sunday, September 20, 2026 from 11 am - 4 pm. Stop by for a chance to meet staff, ask questions, check out some vehicles, and learn more about their operations.
