As we look back on our final meeting of the season last Monday, we are incredibly proud of all that our Mayor's Youth Commission members have accomplished this year! From community service projects and civic engagement initiatives to leadership development and advocacy efforts, our youth have continued to make a meaningful impact throughout our city.

This year has been filled with growth, collaboration, and opportunities for young leaders to use their voices to create positive change. We are grateful for every member who dedicated their time, energy, and passion to serving their community.

While MYC is taking a well-deserved summer break, the work doesn't stop here. Our members will continue to lead, serve, and inspire wherever they go, carrying the mission of youth leadership and community engagement with them.

Thank you to our members, families, city leaders, and community partners for supporting our youth throughout another successful year. We can't wait to see what the future holds!

💙 We’ll see you soon!

⏰🚀 🚀⏰

Today we're taking a trip back to Friday, May 22, when Newport News MYC members had the opportunity to participate in a meaningful intergenerational activity at Hidenwood Retirement Center!

Our youth spent time connecting with residents through conversation, laughter, and shared experiences, proving that meaningful relationships can bridge generations. We ate good, danced a little, played some games, and even decorated personalized coasters for residents to enjoy in their living quarters. From sharing stories to creating keepsakes and lasting memories, the day was filled with joy, connection, and community.

Thank you to the residents and staff at Hidenwood Retirement Center for welcoming our MYC members and making this experience so special. We are proud of our youth leaders for representing Newport News and demonstrating the importance of service, compassion, and building relationships across generations.

💙 Together, we continue to build stronger communities—one conversation, one dance, and one smile at a time.

📸 Check out some of our favorite moments from this amazing day!

We are incredibly proud of our Newport News Mayor’s Youth Commission (MYC) students who recently represented our city at the 2026 Hampton Roads Social Justice Conference! 🌟

A powerful group of young women took the stage to shed light on the negative effects of va**ng, bringing awareness to an issue impacting so many of today’s teens. Their message was both informative and inspiring, encouraging healthier choices and stronger community awareness.

We also want to recognize one of our outstanding young men who delivered an impactful presentation on the importance of early mental health interventions. His work highlighted the value of support, education, and breaking the stigma around mental health for young people.

Both presentations were thoughtful, engaging, and truly showcased the passion and leadership of our MYC students. We couldn’t be more proud of the way they represented Newport News and used their voices to advocate for meaningful change in our community.

Please join us in celebrating these incredible young leaders! 👏💙

Last night, we had the incredible opportunity to attend the 2026 State of the City, and we’re so grateful to have been part of such an inspiring event! 🌟

As MYC youth, we were honored to lead the Pledge of Allegiance and represent young people in our city. Being in the room and hearing the vision for the future of Newport News reminded us that our voices matter and that we all play a role in building what’s next.

We also had the opportunity to join Mayor Phillip Jones as he presented the Key to the City to NNPS principals—recognizing the educators who make a difference in our lives every day. 🔑

We want to thank everyone for the warm hospitality and for creating space for youth to be included in such an important event. Experiences like this inspire us to stay engaged, lead, and continue making a positive impact in our community!
