Great advice from our friends at Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter.

⛈️ Hurricane season is almost here, and severe weather can happen fast — when emergencies strike, not all evacuation shelters are able to accept pets. 🐾

Now is the time to make a plan for your furry family members:

🐶 Make sure pets have ID tags and microchips with updated information
🐱 Keep vaccination records and medications easily accessible
🦴 Pack a pet emergency kit with food, water, bowls, leashes, carriers, and comfort items
📍 Research pet-friendly hotels, shelters, or boarding options ahead of time
👨‍👩‍👧 Never leave pets behind during an evacuation

Being prepared can save lives — including theirs. Take a little time now to ensure your pets stay safe during storms and emergencies. ❤️

ANY tropical system is capable of producing tornadoes! We're quite familiar with that here locally as many of our tropical systems have produced significant tornado threats. Tropical Storm Isaias in August 2020 is a memorable one as many cells within the rain bands were rotating, prompting many tornado warnings. Isaias went on to produce at least 15 tornadoes in our local area during the early morning hours, including an EF-3 in Bertie County, NC.

Tropical tornadoes are often short-lived but they can produced enhanced areas of damage. Sometimes these tornadoes can occur in the outer rain bands, well ahead of the center of the storm. To prepare for the possibility of tornadoes it's important to have multiple ways to receive warnings, so you can seek shelter quickly if a warning is issued for your area. If you receive a tornado warning, be sure to seek shelter inside a sturdy building, on the lowest floor and as far away from any windows as possible.

Hurricane Preparedness week is underway! Standby for the Peninsula MRC Hurricane/Shelter Preparedness Drill this Friday.

The best time to prepare is now before hurricane season begins. Avoid having to rush through potentially life-saving preparations by starting early. Get your disaster supplies while the shelves are still stocked, and get that insurance checkup early, as flood insurance requires a 30-day waiting period. Take the time now to write down your hurricane plan and share it with your family. Determine family meeting places, and make sure to include an out-of-town location in case of evacuation. It only takes one storm to change lives forever. Use https://www.ready.gov/plan to help prepare your family today!
