Newport News Police Foundation

Newport News Police Foundation The Newport News Police Foundation is dedicated to promoting "Excellence in Policing" by providing resources not readily available from traditional funding.

Our goal is to make Newport News a better place to live, work and raise a family. For Newport News police officers, wearing the uniform is more than a job. These men and women are dedicated to protecting our citizens. But they’re not just police officers. They are fathers and mothers, they are your neighbors; they have a stake in this community just as you do. They have pride in their city, as wel

l as in their jobs. Given the opportunity through additional funding, these officers can have tremendously more positive impact: providing leadership opportunities to at-risk youth, increasing officer presence in difficult areas, using new technologies to fight and prevent crime, and much more. There is a ripple effect to the benefits as well: as our neighborhoods grow safer and stronger, we prepare more young people for productive futures, and attract new residents and new businesses. So, our economic development expands, the tax base grows and we all benefit from a better Newport News. Your contribution to the Foundation supports the great work of the Newport News Police Department. Here are some of the major ways your support helps:

Sending our love, prayers, and deepest condolences to K9 Knight’s family and the entire K-9 unit. Our four-legged partners become cherished members of our families, and we are sad to hear the news of his passing.

Our thoughts and prayers are also with the injured Officers. We wish them strength, healing, and a swift, safe recovery.

Today, we honor and remember K-9 Knight.

A 5-year-old German Shepherd/Malinois mix from Slovakia, Knight faithfully served alongside his handler, Cpl. John Walsh, for the past four years. Together, they formed an unbreakable bond built on trust, loyalty and a shared commitment to protecting our community.

Throughout his career, Knight assisted in numerous operations involving tracking and apprehension, helping officers safely carry out their mission and return home to their families.

Knight was named after the knights of old who lived by a code: protecting others through honor and bravery. He embodied that spirit every day he wore the badge.

A K-9 patrol vehicle will be parked in front of our building, and members of the community are welcome to leave flowers in honor of Knight’s memory.

Knight’s legacy will live on through the lives he touched, the officers he served beside and the community he helped protect.

Knight is survived by his handler, Cpl. John Walsh, his family, and the many members of our department who were fortunate enough to know and work alongside him.

Thank you for your service, Knight. We will never forget your sacrifice.

And just like that, the 2025–2026 YAPC program has come to a close—well, almost! We had an incredible time celebrating our YAPC students and giving our seniors a memorable send-off as they prepare for their next chapter.

A special thank you to Papa John's Pizza of Hampton Roads for helping sponsor our program this year. Your support helped make this experience even more meaningful for our students, and we are truly grateful!
