We’re hiring an SRF Mechanical Designer to help develop state-of-the-art superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) components and systems that support cutting-edge research at Jefferson Lab.

You’ll work alongside designers, engineers and physicists to turn concepts into working assemblies, creating complex 3D models and drawings using Siemens NX and AutoCAD.

Eight years ago, Jefferson Lab and the Virginia Peninsula Chamber hosted the very first Spotlight on the Peninsula event right here at our facility. Last week, we welcomed the Chamber and the local community back for the series' return to where it all started.

Spotlight on the Peninsula brings together business leaders and community members to highlight the critical components of the economic growth engine on the Peninsula and the ways that collaboration can strengthen our region. The event offered a look beyond the lab’s fences, highlighting the people, partnerships and innovations that connect Jefferson Lab’s national mission to opportunities and challenges here in Hampton Roads.

The lab’s research has found its way into daily life here in Hampton Roads. Detector technology developed at our lab has been applied to early detection of breast cancer. Our commercialization team is working with compact accelerator researchers to explore applications and ink partnerships for food pasteurization and PFAS mitigation. A sensor we originally built to help Savannah River National Laboratory monitor nuclear waste sites is now the subject of a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement with a startup looking to apply the technology to the burgeoning nuclear fission and fusion industries. And our team, working alongside researchers from Old Dominion University and the University of Virginia, is developing new machine-learning techniques that can predict coastal flooding in seconds rather than hours.

Thank you to the Virginia Peninsula Chamber for co-hosting, to everyone who joined us and to the researchers who shared their work: Holly Szumila-Vance, Ryan Bodenstein, Jack McKisson, Michael Dion and Chetan Kumar. Spotlight on the Peninsula exists to help our community understand the world-class assets already in its backyard. We are glad to show what is possible when our region's institutions, businesses and researchers stay connected.

In this hands-on role, you’ll work alongside engineers to translate engineering drawings and CAD models into CNC/NC programs for electron beam welding, helping develop and fabricate precision components for Jefferson Lab and other nuclear research laboratories around the world.

With students across Hampton Roads heading back to school today, we’re taking one last look at a summer school we wouldn’t mind repeating.

Students in Jefferson Lab’s Big Data Summer School spent five weeks building skills in scientific computing, artificial intelligence and machine learning through hands-on coding and collaborative capstone projects. They closed out the program with final presentations, sharing their research and answering questions about their work.

How do you isolate just one color from a beam of light?

Students in our Big Data Science and Applications Pathway Summer School put their design skills to the test with a Build a Beam challenge. Using a set of provided materials, teams had to design, build and test a system that isolated a specific color from the visible light spectrum.

The hands-on activity challenged students to experiment, solve problems and refine their designs as they explored the science of light and optics.

We don’t always find what we expect when we look inside matter.

Nuclear physicists with the GlueX Collaboration at Jefferson Lab set out to find one exotic particle candidate. Instead, they found evidence of two unexpected structures.

The findings could offer new clues about exotic particles and help us better understand the role gluons, carriers of the strong nuclear force, play in the formation of matter.
