Today at 9:49 a.m., NBPD officers responded to Jamboree Road and Santa Barbara Drive regarding a two-vehicle traffic collision.

Both vehicles sustained significant damage and airbags were deployed. Both involved parties were transported to local hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The collision remains under investigation.

Please drive safely, remain alert, and be mindful of changing traffic conditions.

2025 Officer of the Year, Officer Samuel Nilsson

Officer Nilsson has taken just about every opportunity to grow his skills and take on new responsibilities. He serves as a Fi****ms Cadre Instructor, a member of the Special Weapons and Tactics Team, a First Aid Instructor, an Explorer mentor, and a Defensive Tactics Instructor.

When moments matter… seconds can save lives.

As temperatures rise during these hot summer days, so does the danger for pets left inside vehicles.

Recently, a Newport Beach Police Department Animal Control Officer responded to a vehicle where five dogs were trapped inside with windows slightly cracked open, most confined in cages, and showing signs of distress as the temperature inside continued to climb. With the animals’ safety at immediate risk, the officer broke a window to quickly get them the help they needed.

After being rescued, the five dogs were evaluated by a veterinarian and found to have body temperatures at a level that can be deadly for dogs.

A parked car can become dangerously hot in just minutes, even with windows cracked or on days that don’t feel extreme. Pets can’t cool themselves the way humans do, and leaving them inside a vehicle can quickly turn into a life-threatening situation.

🐾 Never leave your pet unattended in a vehicle.
🐾 On hot days, leave pets at home whenever possible.
🐾 If you see an animal in distress inside a vehicle, call for help immediately.

Our Animal Control Officers are there when moments matter, protecting the community’s two- and four-legged residents.

2025 Sworn Supervisor of the Year, Sergeant Michael Fletcher

Mike was promoted to Sergeant in 2024 and is currently assigned as a Field Supervisor in the Patrol Division. In addition to his patrol assignment, Mike is a member of the Field Training Officer Program, Fi****ms Cadre, and Explorer Program.

2025 Civilian Supervisor of the Year, Computer Systems Manager Tom Encheff

Tom joined NBPD in 2002 and was previously recognized as Civilian Employee of the Year in 2005 for his work as an Information Technology Coordinator. He now serves as our Computer Systems Manager, where he supervises the team assigned to the department’s Information Technology Unit.

A stolen U-Haul that had been overdue since June was recovered after NBPD officers received an alert on the vehicle and quickly located it within the city.

Officers conducted a traffic stop, safely taking the driver into custody without incident. During the investigation, officers also located drugs.

Another stolen vehicle recovered, illegal drugs removed from our community, and another example of how technology and teamwork help keep Newport Beach safe.
