Join us for the Dedication of Cheswill Street!
The Town of Newmarket invites you to celebrate as we unveil new street signs renaming Beech Street Ext. to Cheswill Street, in honor of Wentworth Cheswill (1746–1817) — a Newmarket native widely regarded as the first African American elected to public office in U.S. history.
Cheswill served Newmarket in local government every year but one from 1768 until his death in 1817, holding roles including selectman, town clerk, assessor, and justice of the peace. During the Revolutionary War, he served as a messenger for the Committee of Safety — work often compared to Paul Revere's — and later joined the Continental Army at the Battle of Saratoga. He also helped found the Newmarket Social Library and is considered New Hampshire's first archaeologist for his early historical fieldwork.
