Volunteer Life- out of the frying pan

While many of you spend your Saturday mornings relaxing, playing golf, or watching your kids' soccer games, your volunteer firefighters were crawling through a life-sized oven filled with blazing pallets. Why do we put ourselves through such intense challenges? Our “why” varies—some aspire to become career firefighters, others find fulfillment in saving lives and protecting property, and many simply want to be good neighbors. No matter the motivation, we're here to serve.
Many volunteer fire departments face staffing struggles. Despite our challenges, we've discovered the answer to finding dedicated individuals to supplement our community volunteers—the backbone of our department. A key part of our success is our training academy. We take passionate young people who dream of a firefighting career and give them the chance to train with us for free. After completing our academy, they can pass the Firefighter 1 exams and become certified, giving them a huge advantage when applying to career fire departments.
While they train, they serve you by working shifts that provide exceptional coverage while our community volunteers are at work or with their families. Most remain with us long after their training is complete. Our academy isn’t just for future career firefighters; many community volunteers have attended ours or similar trainings to better serve and protect their neighbors. Join us and experience the thrill of making a real difference!

Welcome, shift volunteer Ryder Yarush!
Recruit class 2026-1.

“I am from Carlsbad, CA, and moved to Post Falls in 2020. I have 5 younger siblings (4 sisters and 1 brother). In my free time I enjoy hiking, rock climbing, and reading books. I was inspired to join the fire service after watching KCFR perform a river rescue in Post Falls.”

Welcome, resident volunteer Angus Daves!
Recruit class 2026-1.

“Hello, my name is Angus Daves and I am more than excited to be working with Newman Lake Fire. I want to join the fire service becuase my life goal is to serve and help people, whether it’s an emergency or just a quick conversation. My goal is to make someone’s day just a little bit better. Newman Lake Fire is important to me becuase it is a place where I get to learn and achieve my goals along with being able to help those who need it. I am originally from Seattle, WA, and moved to Spokane to pursue my goal of being apart of the fire service and EMS. I look forward to gaining experience and knowledge with NLFR, as well as serving the community I now call home.”

Welcome, shift volunteer Mike Stussy!
Mike comes to us with previous firefighting experience and is an instructor for our current 2026-1 Recruit Academy.

“My family and I recently relocated to Liberty Lake from Central WA for career changes. I have been in the WA Fire Service since 2003 and wanted to find an opportunity to continue that involvement with the Fire Service and community once we were settled. I am excited to be working alongside the crew at NLFR and am looking forward to continued growth as a Firefighter/EMT in this area!”

Welcome, shift volunteer Triston Madison!
Recruit class 2026-1.

“I have always wanted to become a firefighter because I am driven to serve others alongside a strong, family-like team. I attended the University of Jamestown where I played college baseball as catcher and earned a Gold Glove for my performance. Being a catcher taught me leadership, communication, and how to stay calm under pressure. I want to bring these qualities into fire fighting. I also enjoy staying active and playing other sports such disc golf, golf, and pickle ball.”
