Description of Job Duties:

This caseworker is assigned to a unit within the Economic Services Section. This position is responsible for taking applications, determining eligibility and maintaining cases for Adult Medicaid. This includes interviewing the customer, verifying information, determining eligibility, maintaining the record, and making changes to the record, as needed. The employee must determine how the changes impact the eligibility of the case. Other duties may be assigned to the worker when deemed necessary by the Supervisor.

This worker must be human services oriented and possess the ability to interact well with the Supervisor, Co-workers, and Customers and be able to work in a team environment. This worker must utilize the online NC FAST Program, Manuals, and DSS Administrative Letters as appropriate. This employee is expected to make the final decision in determining eligibility by applying written policy, but be able to recognize situations that should be referred to the Supervisor for clarification.

Educational/Experience Requirements:

IMC II

· One year of experience as an Income Maintenance Caseworker

IMC I work against IMC II for 1 year

· Graduation from an accredited associate degree program a) Human Services Technology b) Social Services Associate c) Paralegal Technology d) Business Administration e) Secretarial Science f) Closely related curriculum; or

· Graduation from high school and two years of paraprofessional, clerical or other public contact experience which included: Negotiating, interviewing, explaining information, gathering and compiling of data, analysis of data and/or the performance of mathematical or legal tasks with at least one year of such experience being in an income maintenance program; or

· Graduation from high school and three years of paraprofessional, clerical or other public contact experience which included: negotiating, interviewing, explaining information, gathering and compiling of data, analysis of data and/or the performance of mathematical or legal tasks; or

· Graduation from a four-year college or university.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: Considerable knowledge of the programs/areas assigned; general knowledge of all agency and community programs and services which could affect the client/applicant. Good mathematical reasoning and computational skills; ability to read, analyze, and interpret rules, regulations, and procedures. Strong computer skills (data entry, on-line manuals, etc.) and interviewing skills are essential in this position. Must be able to effectively communicate with customers and the general public (both verbally and in writing) to obtain data, and to explain rules, regulations, and procedures Must possess a valid driver's license.

Hello Avery County! You’ve had days to prepare for the winter storm coming our way. We hope you are as ready as you can be and that we get nothing but rain! However, models are showing ice, snow, rain and at the end frigid temperatures. If this happens Avery County Emergency Management is ready. In the event of large scale power outages we have 3 warming shelters on standby. The Rock Gym in Newland, Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Banner Elk and Riverside Elementary school in the lower end of the county. The Rock Gym in Newland will have the animal trailer as well, if you go to the other shelters with animals they must be crated, no exceptions. If/ when these shelters are opened we will announce it here and in hyper-reach for the areas it affects. If you need to utilize a warming shelter please bring your blankets, pillows, snacks & your medications. EOC will be on standby and open if needed, the non-emergent number once opened is 828-733-8273. Do NOT call 911 for General Information, it is for emergencies only. We are from the mountains and winter weather is not new to us, don’t panic, just be prepared.

Due to recent cuts in SNAP benefits, Feeding Avery Families Food Pantry will hold an additional distribution day on Friday, October 31st, from 10:00am to 1:00pm. We will be open for drive-thru only distribution during this time to help meet increased community needs.

We remain committed to ensuring that every neighbor has access to healthy, nutritious food during this challenging time.
