Company 2 is deeply saddened by the recent passing of retired Captain Richard D. Brown, who died peacefully on March 11, 2026, surrounded by his family.

Captain Brown proudly dedicated over 57 years of service as a volunteer firefighter, including more than 50 years with the Newington Fire Department. He served with distinction, rising through the ranks to Captain of Company 2 and becoming the department’s first Safety Division Captain. Even after retirement, he remained an active member of the Newington Veteran Firefighters Association.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Brown family during this difficult time.

Company 2 is deeply saddened by the passing of former Fire Chief Joseph β€œDuke” James Kalasky.

Chief Kalasky joined the Newington Volunteer Fire Department in 1949 and served the department for an extraordinary 46 years, retiring in 1995. During his career, he rose through the ranks of 2nd Lieutenant, 1st Lieutenant, Captain of Company 2, and Deputy Chief, before being appointed Chief of the Department in 1975, a position he held for 20 years.

His decades of leadership, dedication, and commitment to the department helped shape the Newington Volunteer Fire Department into what it is today. Chief Kalasky’s legacy will live on through the many members he led and mentored over the years.

We extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who had the honor of serving with him.

Rest in peace, Chief. Your watch is complete.

Today, our members spent time training and getting familiar with the new Engine 2, learning every feature and making sure we’re ready to put it to work when it counts. We also took the opportunity to pump the new rig and get comfortable with its operation out in the field.

Standing tall for those who stood for us. Thank you to veterans everywhere. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ
