I work out of my backyard here in the Newington/Lorton area and yikes are these girls productive! Nothing I read prepared me for how much bees can take control of your life, but mine have and I love it. I started a few years ago with just one hive and through trial and error and I've developed that into a flourishing apiary. So much so that I needed to open a small business just to sell off all th
e excess bees and honey each year. If I've done anything right, its that I absolutely dote on my bees and no doubt spoil them. In this area there are not that many beekeepers but plenty of ornamental flowers in the surrounding neighborhoods and fields of wildflowers on Ft. So there is plenty of nectar, but not enough bees to collect it. I've been told my honey tastes more like wildflowers than any other honey folks have tried in the past. If you live in the Lorton/Newington/Ft. Belvoir area and you want to support a local apiary and/or want local honey due to its allergy mitigating qualities, then you can't get much more local than me. I sell 5 frame nucleus hives for $200. They come in a wax dipped white cardboard nuc box, wired wax foundation. I was inspected by the state last month and they only found 1 mite out of my 6 hives. All of the hives overwintered with ease and come from strong local stock. I'm also opening up a honey extraction service this year. See my Information Sheet in my photos to learn more.
