From the Chief’s Desk

As Chief, I felt the need to take a moment to say just how proud I am to serve as Chief of such a great group of men and women.

Yesterday was no typical Saturday for the Lisbon Fire Department.

While most people were still in bed yesterday morning, the members of the Lisbon Fire Department were already answering the call. We were requested for a person experiencing a medical emergency. Shortly after, one of our EMS crews headed out for a medical assignment that would keep them committed throughout the day. Then came another request for medical assistance which was handled promptly.

We were also honored to have the privilege of presenting the colors for a great friend and past Chief of the Plainfield Fire Department. It was a privilege to stand alongside our brothers and sisters in the fire service and pay our respects.

From there, we went on to two more medical calls, nearly simultaneously.

I truly cannot say enough about the men and women of this great organization. The dedication, commitment, and willingness of our members to step up whenever they are needed never ceases to amaze me. They do it without hesitation, and they do it because they care deeply about the residents of the Town of Lisbon and the surrounding communities we are privileged to serve.

Days like today remind me why I am so proud to be a member of this department and even more proud to serve as its Chief.

So, from me, Chief Gifford, I want to personally thank each and every member of the Lisbon Fire Department. Thank you for your time, your dedication, your sacrifices, and most importantly, for being there when our community needs you.

I am proud to serve alongside every one of you.

September 5, 2026 - the Lisbon Fire Department had the honor of holding the American Flag with Tower-154 on RT-12 in Plainfield for the funeral procession of Past Chief Leo Berube. Not only was Leo a Chief in Plainfield Fire Company #1 but also Deputy Chief in the Mortlake Fire Company in Brooklyn. He was also a good friend to many in the Lisbon Fire Department as we worked many fires in the past, not only in Plainfield but other communities as well. The Lisbon Fire Department sends our deepest condolences to the Berube Family and Friends.

September 4,2026 - Our new to us (gently used) Ambulance 654 was put in service this morning. Within minutes of being in service, it was dispatched to its first call. Our newest member of our fleet is a 2015 Chevy that was recently purchased from the Andover Ct Fire Department. This ambulance replaces our 2011 Ambulance that was starting to become unreliable. This latest purchase will ensure we will be able to provide our town with adequate ambulances for our residents and guests. Below is a photo of Ambulance 654 at Backus after its first transport.

We are currently operating numerous calls in Town. All three ambulances are on assignments. Another incident is a tree and wires down on Ross Hill Rd near Newett Rd. The road is completely blocked and there are roughly 4 telephone pole lengths of live primary wires down. Please stay away from down powerlines. We have had to advise residents to move away from the down power lines. We are awaiting Eversource. Please seek alternative routes.

This weeks training was on ground ladder use at an acquired building on Rt-12 by Norwich Lumber. Crews practiced deploying ground ladders on the building for rescue, ventilation and fireground support. We would like to thank the property owner for allowing us use of the building for upcoming trainings. It is a great opportunity for us to use acquired building, so we can simulate more realistic scenarios for training.

On the morning of August 31st at 06:45hrs, the Lisbon Fire Department, American paramedic and CT State Police were dispatched to Kinsman Hill Rd at Townhouse Rd for a car vs motorcycle. Lisbon Ambulance-754, Engine-154, & Engine-Tank-154 arrived to find the incident was as dispatched. Lisbon EMT's evaluated, treated and transported the motorcycle operator for non-life threatening injures. The paramedic was canceled as the injuries did not require a paramedic's services. The operator of the car was uninjured and refused treatment or transport. The cause of the accident is under investigation by CT State Police. Part of Kinsman Hill Rd was closed for about 30 minutes so emergency services could operate. The road is reopened.

On Thursday August 27, 2026 at 20:45hrs, the Lisbon FD was dispatched as part of a 1st Alarm assignment to the Borough of Jewett City for a building fire. Lisbon ET-154 assisted with searching for possible residents trapped in the building and fire suppression support while Lisbon Tower-154 was assigned roof ventilation. Lisbon Ambulance-754 was assigned to the incident as a 2nd ambulance as the 1st Ambulance was transporting an injured firefighter to Backus Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The fire was located and quickly extinguished. The cause is under investigation by the Griswold Fire Marshals Office.

08/16/2026

On Saturday August 15, 2026 at 18:27hrs, The Lisbon Fire Department was dispatched to Ross Hill Rd for a car vs pole with reports of five (5) victims, one reportedly unconscious. Due to the number of reported victims, an extra engine from Jewett City and an extra ambulance from Canterbury was started. Lisbon Ambulance 754 arrived 1st and started triaging the victims. Lisbon Engine-154 arrived next, established command followed by Lisbon Ambulance-554 and ET-154. All victims were assessed, Three (3) victims refused treatment and transport, two (2) victims were transported for non-life threatening injuries by Lisbon Ambulances. One with a Hartford Healthcare paramedic at the Advanced Life Support Level (ALS) and the second patient at the Basic Life Support Level (BLS). Eversource removed the downed pole and ensure the second pole was made safe until it can be replaced. Ross Hill Rd was shut down for approximately 1 hour. The accident is under investigation by the Connecticut State Police - Troop E Montville.
