YES, WE ACCEPT MOST BATTERIES FREE!
There has been some confusion about battery disposal at the Belle Fourche Landfill, so we want to clear it up.
Most household batteries can be brought to the landfill FREE of charge during normal operating hours.
Here's what to do:
- Keep your batteries separate from your regular trash.
- Tell the scale house you have batteries when you arrive.
- Our staff will direct you to the proper location for safe disposal.
From there, landfill personnel collect the batteries and send them to recyclers, keeping them out of the general fill area.
Why does this matter?
Landfill fires are becoming an increasing problem, and batteries can be a serious source of fire when they are placed in regular trash or recycling. Keeping them out of the general waste stream helps reduce that risk.
Please note: Large lithium batteries, such as those used in electric and hybrid vehicles, are not accepted through this program.
If you have batteries, don't throw them in the trash. Bring them to the landfill and let us handle them safely.
