Meade County South Dakota
FRAUD ALERT, (Again)
Well, congratulations everyone — it’s a brand-new year, and like clockwork, the scammers have also shown up right on schedule. Unfortunately, they’re doing what they do best: preying on people who are already stressed, scared, or hurting.
So let’s be painfully clear, because apparently this still needs to be said:
The Meade County Sheriff’s Office — and no other legitimate government agency — does NOT conduct business through Bitcoin kiosks, cryptocurrency, gift cards, smoke signals, carrier pigeons, or “this one weird trick.”
If anyone contacts you and says you need to pay a bill, post bond, resolve a warrant, or “fix a legal issue” using gift cards or a Bitcoin kiosk, congratulations — you are not talking to law enforcement.
You are talking to a criminal who is actively stealing your money.
Here’s how we actually work, in the real world:
Face to face
Inside county buildings
With real people
Using real payment methods
Not behind a gas station next to a Bitcoin machine.
The latest scam making the rounds involves fraudsters telling people they need to post bond for a Meade County jail inmate using a local Bitcoin kiosk. Spoiler alert: that is not a thing.
Bond is ONLY accepted:
At the Clerk of Courts Office, or
At the Meade County Sheriff’s Office Jail
That’s it. Full stop.
If someone is pressuring you, threatening you, or rushing you to “pay now or else,” take a breath and walk away — because real law enforcement does not operate like this.
Don’t let these predators win.
When in doubt, call us directly — not the scammer who’s suddenly very interested in your gift card balance.
