Great Camp Santanoni

Camp Santanoni, a National Historic Landmark, is one of the great treasures of the Adirondacks.

The Friends of Camp Santanoni, who manages this page, operates under the auspices of Adirondack Architectural Heritage (AARCH). Santanoni was built for Robert and Anna Pruyn of Albany beginning in 1892. The estate eventually included 12,900 acres and nearly four-dozen buildings. Since 1972 the Santanoni Preserve has been owned by New York State. It is on the National Register of Historic Places, and is a National Historic Landmark. AARCH has long been associated with the protection, interpretation and restoration of this regional treasure. How YOU Can Help:
In 1997, AARCH helped to create the Friends of Camp Santanoni, in order to provide long-term financial and volunteer support for conservation, interpretation, and public use of Camp Santanoni. The Friends is a partnership of non-profit organizations, the Town of Newcomb, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and the thousands of people who love this special place and believe in its preservation and use for public education, recreation, and inspiration. The Friends of Camp Santanoni operates under the auspices of Adirondack Architectural Heritage (AARCH) through an "Adopt-a-Natural Resource" Agreement with NYSDEC. Members of the Friends of Camp Santanoni:
*Provide financial support for the preservation and interpretation of Camp Santanoni
*Are invited to be part of volunteer work projects at the camp
*Receive discounts on Santanoni publications and merchandise
*Attend special Friends events free
*Receive the Friends newsletter

We are delighted to welcome our Mobility Device Interpreter, Cathy Townsend, to this fall!

Cathy will be managing our mobility device program in partnership with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, and leading tours of the Main Camp Fridays through Sundays and holiday Mondays through Indigenous Peoples' Day, Oct. 12.

Cathy brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the role, having worked in the hospitality and public sectors for more than 30 years. She has served as a library director in Vermont, and as a tour guide at Shelburne Farms and the Shelburne Museum. She is an Adirondack Architectural Heritage (AARCH) member with a lifelong passion for architecture and historic preservation.

Join Cathy for a tour of the Main Camp Fridays through Mondays at 12 p.m., 1 p.m., and 2 p.m., and on Monday, Oct 12, at 12 p.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.

We're so excited to be a part of this year's TR Weekend in Discover Newcomb, NY! This special, 125th anniversary celebration of Theodore Roosevelt's famous Midnight Ride kicks off next weekend!

We will have Main Camp tours at noon on Friday, Saturday and Sunday (9/11-9/13), along with special tours at the Gate Lodge and a history hike to the Farm on Sunday, 9/13. Visit the TR Weekend page for a full schedule of events and to sign up for complimentary wagon rides and tours!

Take a special tour of the Farm next Sunday, Sept. 6, with our wonderful Volunteer Docent Jennifer Kaspar!

Tours will be held at 10:15 a.m. and 2 p.m. Hike, bike, take the Newcombe Farm wagon or borrow a mobility device to catch this tour!

How quickly the summer goes by! Our daily tours have come to an end, but there's still time for a visit this fall!

Tours of the Main Camp will continue Fridays through Sundays, and holiday Mondays through Indigenous Peoples' Day, Oct. 12. Tours meet on the Main Camp porch at 12 p.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. (except during TR Weekend, when tours will be held at 12 p.m.)

Can't make one of our tours? Grab a guidebook from the Gate Lodge Visitor Center and hike, bike, or ride the Newcombe Farm wagon to see the beauty of the on a self-guided tour this autumn. Life could be a dream at Santanoni! ✨
Today I am at the Gate Lodge! We have only a few Gate Lodge tours left this summer, so come on a Saturday :) The Visitor Center is also open to stop in (you can buy a matching red Santanoni hat like I have!)
Happy to report that I can do too of my favorite things while at Santanoni: watercolor and repair old windows! 🎨🔧

Another lovely day at Santanoni with Reagan! 🤠Today was spent at the farm with our lovely volunteers! We did landscaping and some restoration work in the creamery. Soon we will have a fully restored Cooley Creamer Cabinet for interpretation! I’d like to think Robert Pruyn (aka Kelly) would be proud! :))
