April 28, 2026 – 10:00 a.m.

With the weather forecast trending drier, warmer and windier over Weston County for the foreseeable future, the Stage 1 Open Burning Restrictions are being reinstated at this time. It is the responsibility of anyone who has burned the past several days to be certain their fire is dead out and does not escape – stir and water the area until there are no embers or heat left in the pile and be sure to double-check the burn for several days. Thank you for being responsible stewards and for your continued support of Weston County Fire!

OPEN BURNING RESTRICTIONS
Effective March 24, 2026

Due to a potentially severe to extreme fire situation throughout Weston County, created by a heavy fuel load and dry conditions, which could create situations that over-extend the firefighting capability of local government the Open Burning Restrictions will take effect March 24 , 2026.

Stage 1 Restrictions:
Discharge of fireworks, exploding target devices and all outdoor fires are prohibited in unimproved areas of Weston County except as provided below:
1. Only small campfires at residences or developed recreation sites, within a fire ring centered within a minimum of 15 feet cleared radius of burnable materials and a shovel and fire suppression means are present at site are permitted.
2. Trash or refuse fires between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., inside containers provided with a spark arrester (no larger than ½” grate openings, ¼” or smaller preferred), centered within a minimum of 15 feet cleared radius of burnable materials and a shovel and fire suppression means are present at site are permitted. (Containers must be completely extinguished outside of these hours)
3. Charcoal fires within enclosed grills centered within a minimum of 15 feet cleared radius of burnable materials and a shovel and fire suppression means are present at site are permitted.
4. Use of acetylene cutting, electric arc welders, or metal grinding centered within a minimum of 15 feet cleared radius of burnable materials and a shovel and fire suppression means are present at site are permitted.
5. The use of portable stoves, lanterns using gas, jellied petroleum, pressurized liquid fuel or fully enclosed (sheepherder type) stove and open fire branding activities centered within a minimum of 15 feet cleared radius of burnable materials and a shovel and fire suppression means are present at site are permitted.

The following persons are exempt from the restrictions imposed in Stage 1 Restrictions:
a. Any federal, state, or local officers engaged in fire, emergency, and law enforcement activities.
b. Any member of a rescue or firefighting force engaged in the performance of an official duty.
c. Exceptions to these restrictions and closures can be made in writing by the Weston County Commissioners.

These restrictions do not include the areas within incorporated cities and towns in Weston County or federal and state lands, as these entities may impose more or less restrictive regulations.

Any violation of the Open Burning Restrictions may be in violation of W.S. 35-9-304 punishable by up to 30 days in jail and up to a $100.00 fine or both together with possible restitution for the cost of fire suppression and damages to others. The County Fire Warden may temporarily lift or re-impose these Open Burning Restrictions. For the latest status on the restrictions visit www.facebook.com/westoncountyfire or call (307) 746-2031.

Friday, April 24, 2026

Due to current and forecasted precipitation and cooler temperatures throughout Weston County for the next several days, the Open Burning Restrictions are temporarily suspended. The suspension of the Open Burning Restrictions does not relieve any individual from their responsibility to ensure their fire does not escape and each individual may still be liable for suppression costs and damages caused to others if their fire gets away. Any fires that are started should be stirred and monitored for several days to ensure they are completely out before dry conditions return.

✅Please call Dispatch at 307-746-4486 extension 1 if you plan on burning so the Fire Department does not get paged to your controlled burn.

❤️Thank you for your continued support and vigilance Weston County!

April 22, 2026 (late p.m.)

Rock Creek Fire Update: Throughout the day, but especially late this afternoon/evening, the fire area experienced estimated sustained winds of 35-45 mph with higher gusts, extremely warm temperatures and extremely low relative humidity. Under these critical fire weather conditions, at 6:21 p.m., the Rock Creek Fire breached containment lines on the NE corner of the fire. With the benefit of some helpful terrain features, Weston County, Wyoming BLM and Thunder Basin National Grassland resources, which included 23 engines, 4 tenders, 2 command units, 2 squads, 1 Fire District dozer, 1 Perino dozer, 2 Perino blades and 2 Weston County Road & Bridge blades, were able to contain the escaped fire to an estimated additional 15-20 acres.
