Update: The Schenk prescribed fire has been CANCELLED due to weather conditions falling outside the approved prescription. This deliberate decision was made because current conditions would prevent us from meeting our operational objectives. We will continue to monitor the forecast and will reschedule when conditions support safe and effective implementation.

_____________________________________________

The Schenk prescribed fire is planned for Thursday, October 8, pending all required approvals. Operations will not commence unless conditions are favorable to implement this burn safely and effectively. The Schenk project is located roughly 5 miles southwest of Jewel Cave National Monument. https://www.fs.usda.gov/r02/blackhills/newsroom/releases/prescribed-fire-notification

PUBLIC SAFETY ALERT: Explosive Devices!!!!

09/24/2026

Isolated to scattered showers and storms are possible Friday due to southwest flow aloft but a passing trough will bring better chances for rain and storms late Sunday into early next week. Daily high temperatures will be above normal through the weekend with more seasonal temps likely next week.

This is exciting and so thankful for Erin and the Extension Office for taking this on and helping with this project.

Introducing the Weston County Livestock Emergency Response Team (LERT)!

Emergencies don't wait for the right time. Wildfires, severe storms, transportation accidents, and other disasters can impact livestock operations with little warning.

That's why Weston County Emergency Management and UW Extension – Weston County are partnering to create the Weston County Livestock Emergency Response Team (LERT).

Our goal is simple:
✅ Connect local resources
✅ Build relationships before emergencies happen
✅ Improve livestock emergency preparedness
✅ Support producers when they need it most

We're currently building an interest list of individuals, businesses, and organizations that would like to stay informed, attend trainings, and learn how they can assist during livestock emergencies.

Whether you're a livestock producer, veterinarian, livestock hauler, equipment owner, volunteer, or simply someone who wants to help, we'd love to hear from you.

📱 Scan the QR code or visit https://forms.gle/4bJ6XfW1nt6iMyw29 to join the interest list today.

Together, we can build a stronger, more prepared Weston County.

These rigs carry someone’s loved ones (even when there isn’t a patient inside). These occupants have already sacrificed so much in order to be afforded the privilege to be there on someone else’s worst day. They shouldn’t have to worry about their own safety while performing those duties. Unfortunately, they do. Other peoples’ unsafe actions put them at risk far more often than is acceptable. Please be vigilant and have patience when around emergency vehicles of any kind. Everyone just wants to go home safe.
