At approximately 4:47 PM this evening, the Newcastle Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the 3000 block of Stirrup Street for a report of smoke coming from the eaves of a residence.

The first arriving unit confirmed smoke coming from the eaves of the roof. Firefighters entered the residence and encountered heavy smoke conditions. Crews were able to quickly locate and extinguish the fire, containing it to the area of origin.

No firefighters or members of the public were injured during the incident.

NVFD resources responding included Command, Engine 2, Utility 9, and 14 firefighters.

We would like to thank Weston County Consolidated Dispatch, Campbell County EMS, Newcastle Police Department, Powder River Energy, and Weston County Fire Protection District for their assistance during the incident.

A good reminder from our neighbors to the East.

The fire truck that comes when you call 911 in South Dakota is more than likely being driven by somebody who was asleep in their own bed just minutes ago. Most of our fire departments in South Dakota are volunteer. Not paid. Not sitting at the station waiting for that phone to ring. They’re welders, teachers, ranchers, farmers, mechanics, business owners, moms, dads, and folks just trying to make a livin’ and take care of their families. But when that pager goes off, everything stops. It might be in the middle of a shower, supper with the family, a birthday party, church, or two o’clock in the mornin’. They get up, pull on their gear, head to the station, jump on a truck, and go. No hesitation. No paycheck waiting on the other end. Just a heart that says,“Somebody needs us.”
And around here, we make do with what we’ve got. Trucks aren’t always new. Equipment costs more than most folks realize. Sometimes a department is trying to keep an old truck runnin’ just a little longer while raising money with fish fries, plate sales, raffles, donations, and the generosity of neighbors. And those calls ain’t always fires. They’re wrecks on dark country roads. Grass fires runnin’ with the South Dakota wind. Medical calls. Rescues. Storms. And those moments when every second matters and your closest help may still be a long ways down the road. But the hardest part—the part folks outside a small community may never truly understand—is that around here… we know the address before we ever get there.
We know whose house it is.
We know whose mama lives there.
We know whose kids are inside.
We know the family standing in the driveway.
And we go anyway.
We do our job. We help our neighbors. We load back up, head home, and when morning comes, we still gotta get up and go to work like it was just another night. That’s what being a volunteer firefighter in a small South Dakota community means. It ain’t about the spotlight.
It ain’t about the recognition.
It’s about your neighbor callin’ for help and knowin’ you’re gonna answer.
So tonight, hug your volunteer firefighter a little tighter. And if you see that fire truck headed down the road, remember there’s a good chance the person behind that wheel left their own family, their own bed, and their own life for a little while…..just to come help yours. See less

Another year, another successful hose testing! ✅️

Fire Catt Hose Testing was in house the last two days completing our annual testing of all NVFD and WCFPD hose. These guys know how to get the job done! In less than two days, they tested and loaded more than 17,800 feet of fire hose, making sure our hose is ready to perform when we need it. It's one less thing our firefighters have to worry about when they're fighting fire!

Thanks to Fire Catt for another outstanding job!

NVFD was dispatched to a report of a tree that had been hit by lightning in the 1100 block of Washington Blvd. Responding resources had to cut the tree down to fully extinguish the fire. Cooperating agencies were: Newcastle, Weston County Consolidated Dispatch, Weston County Fire, and Newcastle Police Department.

Twenty-five years ago today, our nation changed forever.

On September 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 people lost their lives in the attacks on our country. Among them were 343 members of the FDNY, along with law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, and countless others who went to work that morning never knowing what the day would bring.

For those of us in the fire service, September 11 holds a special meaning. The 343 firefighters we lost answered the call because people needed help. They climbed those stairs while thousands of others were trying to get out. They were doing what firefighters have always done—going toward danger to help someone on what may be the worst day of their life.

Today, 25 years later, the Newcastle Volunteer Fire Department remembers those who were lost, those who responded, and the families who continue to carry their memory.

We will never forget.

Tonight, Newcastle Volunteer Fire Department was joined by Black Hills Life Flight 7 out of Hot Springs, Campbell County Health-EMS, and Weston County Health Services for a great evening of training. Members had the opportunity to tour, discuss operations and patient transport with the BHLF7 crew. Afterwards training shifted to stabilization and extrication techniques on a complex accident, involving a school bus.
We would like to extend a huge thank you to Weston County School District #1 for their continued support of NVFD and for donating decommissioned school buses, allowing our members to train in realistic scenarios.
We would also like to thank Kaiser Underground for providing equipment to help us move our scenario vehicles and set up tonight's training.
Training together with our mutual aid and healthcare partners helps ensure we're prepared to work seamlessly when a real emergency occurs. Thank you to everyone who helped make tonight's training possible!
