The Newburyport Preservation Trust honored eight homeowners and a local architect with Preservation Awards at a ceremony at the Custom House Maritime Museum Sunday afternoon. Honorees included Jack and Lisa Wasson, who received a “Stewardship” award for the restoration and care of their house at 54 Liberty St., built circa 1750; Jayne and Kevin Convey, who received an “Exterior Restoration” award for work on their circa 1790 home at 360 High St.; Anna Wallack and Mike Buhkin, who also were recognized with an “Exterior Restoration” award for work on their circa 1750 house at 24 Merrill St.; and Renee and Daniel Bourdeau, who received an award for “Sensitive Addition to a Historic Building” for work on their circa1800 home at 376 High St.
The Trust also presented a “Sensitive Addition to a Historic Building” award to Scott Brown of Scott Brown Architects, Newburyport, for his design of the Bourdeaus’ addition.
Stephanie Niketic, a preservation advocate and former longtime member of the Preservation Trust’s board, served as emcee for the event.
The award recipients were chosen by the board from nominations submitted by members of the public and by board members.
Earlier in May, which was Preservation Month, the Trust awarded the $2,500 Reg Bacon Scholarship to Newburyport High School senior Amelia McLeod, who will be attending the University of Vermont. The scholarship, established to honor Bacon, a longtime Trust board member, is presented each year to an area student who plans to pursue historic preservation-related areas of study.

We had a great crowd Friday night for the Preservation Month keynote speech by Vin Cipolla, president of Historic New England at the FRS Unitarian Universalist Church on Pleasant Street, Newburyport. He gave an interesting presentation about the importance of preservation and pointed to "livability" as a key to keeping historic structures and neighborhoods vibrant and essential. Several good questions after his speech, too. National Trust for Historic Preservation Richard Lodge Alison Hardy
