Newburyport Youth Services and The BEACON Coalition are proud to announce the winners of the 10th Annual Asset Builder Awards happening on Wednesday, March 21st at 7pm in the City Hall Auditorium. This is our annual opportunity in the city to recognize members of the community that through their work encourage, empower, and support youth in one of the eight categories of the 40 Assets.

The 40 Assets framework (developed by the Search Institute) identifies a set of skills, experiences, relationships, and behaviors that enable young people to develop into successful and contributing adults. The greater number of assets a younger person has, the lower number of high risk behaviors they get involved in. NYS and the BEACON Coalition use this model as their framework for positive youth development and prevention.

"In the last 10 years, high-risk drinking increased 60% among women, and alcohol use disorder nearly doubled. That's right - in ten years, we doubled the amount of alcohol addiction among women. (2017 JAMA study). Which means: those little girls in that video - OUR DAUGHTERS - are now twice as likely to end up addicted to alcohol than we were. The rates for men were significantly less - we're not only catching up with them but we're on target to surpass them entirely."

In Newburyport, the 2015 YRBS survey of high school students said that "74.5% of NHS said that " at parties or gatherings with children and adults” alcohol is always or almost always being served to adults."

Our young people are watching and we are the models for social norms as they grow up. Parents, if you are worried about your drinking, get help: 1-877-815-9784

As part of the Youth Council’s continued “It’s Our 20% Campaign”, Newburyport Youth Services and Samaritans of Merrimack Valley will be holding a Su***de Prevention Community Discussion on November 9th at 7pm at the Rec Center (former Brown School) Gym.
This community event will give people an opportunity to ask questions about su***de prevention and mental health challenges. We will talk about the risk factors and warning signs of su***de as well as how to start a conversation with your children or anyone. We will also talk about how the community can come together to support each other and work to further reduce the incidence of su***de in the community. We will also provide attendees with numerous resources that are available to not only help prevent su***des but also provide support in the event of a su***de death. Like other issues, mental health is a community issue. And we hope that the people of Newburyport will come and be a part of this important conversation.
