CSEA 7910 Union

01/28/2026

Csea 7910 would like to recognize the hard-working men and women of the custodial crews and the Buildings and Grounds Department at NECSD.

While we cannot name everyone individually, we would like to recognize Joseph Ammons and the entire Buildings & Grounds crew who worked tirelessly before, during, and after the storm.

We also want to recognize Jennifer Dietz and her custodial staff especially the head and senior custodians who led the cleanup efforts in their buildings. This work could not have been accomplished without your leadership, dedication, and deep knowledge of your schools.

Your efforts should not go unnoticed. We are Newburgh Enlarged City School District, through and through.

Dear brothers and sisters

I want to express that I fully understand the frustrations of the last week of school. It seems as if CSEA was given the short end of stick yet again! Regarding the half days this week, contractually we had no leg to stand on since school was not closed. It was placed on a half day for students, half day PD for Teachers, Teaching Assistants and Teacher Aides.

Like yourselves, I agree that these decisions could have been done differently but that was out of our control. We were not afforded the opportunity to weigh in on the districts decision like the NTA was for these half days.

A lot of people have raised questions of why we didn’t have a SMOA in place and that’s simply because we were not brought into the equation. There are members that are choosing chaos over understanding and looking for someone to blame. Myself as well as your executive board have sent out multiple emails, as well as phone calls to try to gain understanding of what was taking place. A result of those phone calls and emails was that were able to at least allow our aids to participate in virtual PD.

In the past four years we have created one of the best contracts CSEA has ever produced, many new stipends created, and added SMOAS for the betterment of our unit. We have gained many shop Stewards and successfully trained grievance representatives by bringing union workshops into the district for the convenience of our members. I think overall our good out weighed the bad. Let’s not lose focus on the work that still needs to be done. Together we can make a difference.

In these uncertain times with our district, we are watching it play out in board meetings and in our building morale which is at an all time low. We are in troubled times, but they will not last forever.

No union will survive based on one person’s thoughts, ideas or influences. It takes us all. We are a very unique group with various titles. We should all still have one goal, to be treated fairly and respectfully and that all things are done equitably.

This executive board truly fights hard for our members day in and day out. These are the truths that you do not see and we do not talk about. We are not shy to speak about things we find unfair and it may not change anything but we make it known that our members are not happy.

We have a contract that protects us against many things but yet it still falls short of others. That is why we must continue building on what we have in place. United we stand!

Sincerely,

John Fisher

CSEA Family:
We’re aware of some of the commentary about a Supplemental Memorandum of Agreement (SMOA) regarding early dismissals that CSEA has been negotiating with the Newburgh Enlarged City School District. This SMOA was on the agenda at last night’s Board of Education meeting, but a board majority voted to table it for now.
Please know that CSEA has been working for months to negotiate this SMOA with the District. Other bargaining units have similar language within their contracts. In the interest of fairness, we look forward to CSEA’s SMOA being approved at an upcoming meeting.
It’s unfortunate that some of the recent rhetoric has distracted from the good work we do every day providing essential services in this school district. We will continue to advocate on your behalf to get this SMOA across the finish line and thank you for your continued support as we remain union strong.

In solidarity,
John Fisher
President, CSEA Unit 7910

In this documentary, NAACP activist Kareem Weaver sets out to reform the low reading scores in his home of Oakland, California. Featuring stories from Weaver's own life, a teacher and two American families, The Right to Read dives into the fight to provide our youngest generation with the most foundational skill for life-long success: the ability to read.
