The Washington Co Sheriff’s Office would like to remind everyone to be cautious with “Wrong Number” or Unsolicited text messages

If you receive a random text message similar to:
“Hey, is this [wrong name]?” or “Did we still meet today?” ….. TREAT IT AS A SCAM!
These messages are designed to get you to reply so the sender can confirm your number is active. After that, they may try to start a friendly conversation, build trust (sometimes over days or weeks), and eventually push you toward sending money, sharing personal information, or “investing” in cryptocurrency. They often try to move the chat to apps like Telegram/WeChat/WhatsApp/Signal and may send links to fake websites or fake investment platforms.

Red flags:
• Unsolicited text from an unknown number
• “Wrong name” or vague references to a meeting/delivery
• Quickly turns into friendly/romantic conversation
• Requests to move to another messaging app
• Any talk about crypto, investing, or quick returns
• Links, screenshots, or requests for personal/financial info

What to do:
• Do not reply (even “wrong number” confirms your number is active)
• Block the number
• Report as spam in your messaging app
• Report scams to the Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line (262-335-4411)
• NEVER click links or share personal/banking info with unknown contacts

Please share, so friends and family know what to watch for

Today was one of those reminders of what community really means. Noah, Grant, and Henry brought our Chief homemade crafts and cards. The family's kindness brightened up the whole building. Thank you to these amazing kids for reminding us that appreciation doesn't have to be big to be meaningful! Merry Christmas!
