The 2-year-old is 3', 30 lbs., with blonde hair and blue eyes, last seen in the area of Hilldale Road in Midway wearing Olaf pajama pants and no shirt or shoes.

Atreus Bird has a known medical condition that may impair his ability to return safely without assistance.

🇺🇸 LABOR DAY WEEKEND MESSAGE 🇺🇸

As our community observes Labor Day weekend, the Newbern Police Department reminds all residents and visitors to make safety and responsible decision-making a priority.

Holiday weekends traditionally bring increased traffic to our roadways. Motorists are urged to remain alert, obey posted speed limits, wear seat belts, eliminate distractions, and allow additional time to reach their destinations safely.

The Newbern Police Department also reminds everyone that impaired driving is dangerous, preventable, and unacceptable. If your Labor Day plans include alcohol, make arrangements for a sober driver before the celebration begins. Never allow yourself, a friend, or a family member to operate a vehicle while impaired.

Our officers will continue working throughout the holiday weekend to help protect our community and keep our roadways safe. We ask everyone to do their part by exercising good judgment and making responsible choices.

OPERATION: MIDNIGHT HAMMER

DYERSBURG, TN - September 1, 2026 - At 12:01 am, in a joint operation, the Dyer County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the District Attorney General’s Office, the West Tennessee Violent Crimes and Drug Task Force/Counter Drug Units, Dyersburg Police Department, and Newbern Police Department, conducted a search of the premises of the Dyer County Jail.

The goal of the operation was to ensure inmate and correction officer compliance with TCI and TDOC regulations.

The operation, consisting of over 30 law enforcement personnel, lasted approximately 3.5 hours and resulted in drugs and contraband being seized.

As Sheriff Montgomery stated in the post-operation debriefing, “Teamwork between ALL agencies was the key to the success of the operation - a special thanks to Chief Barr and Chief Langford for their cooperation and direct participation as well as EMS for being on standby.”

The Dyer County Sheriff’s Office is committed to the safety and protection of its citizens.

Suspicious Package Investigation on Wheatley Drive

During the morning hours of August 24, 2026, officers with the Newbern Police Department responded to the area of Wheatley Drive after a suspicious package was located.

Newbern Police Department investigators responded to the scene and began an investigation. Out of an abundance of caution, investigators consulted with the Jackson Police Department Bomb Squad to ensure the package could be properly evaluated and handled.

Investigators ultimately determined the package did not pose a threat. Bomb Squad technicians responded to the scene and safely disposed of the package.

Newbern Police Chief Greg Barr expressed his appreciation to the agencies that assisted with the incident.

“I want to personally thank the Jackson Police Department and its Bomb Squad for their quick response and assistance,” Chief Barr said. “We also greatly appreciate the assistance provided by the Dyer County Sheriff’s Office. When dealing with a situation involving a suspicious package, the safety of our citizens and first responders is our highest priority. The cooperation and resources provided by our law enforcement partners allowed us to bring this incident to a safe conclusion."

The Newbern Police Department appreciates the patience and cooperation of residents in the area while officers and technicians worked to ensure the scene was safe.

Arrest Following Foot Pursuit on Wheatley Drive

During the late evening hours of August 23, 2026, officers with the Newbern Police Department responded to the area of Wheatley Drive regarding a report of a disorderly person.

While officers were conducting their on-scene investigation, the suspect, later identified as James Cahill, 18, fled from officers on foot. During the ensuing foot pursuit, Cahill brandished a handgun. Officers continued the pursuit and took Cahill into custody without further incident.

During the investigation, officers determined that the fi***rm in Cahill's possession had been reported stolen. It was also discovered that Cahill was wanted out of Illinois on active warrants.

As a result of the investigation, Cahill has been charged with Evading Arrest, Unlawful Possession of a Fi***rm, Fugitive from Justice, Burglary, and Theft of a Fi***rm Under $2,500.

Cahill is currently being held at the Dyer County Law Enforcement Center pending an appearance in Newbern Municipal Court.

The Newbern Police Department would like to recognize the officers involved for their professionalism and restraint in safely bringing this incident to a conclusion despite the presence of a fi***rm.

All persons arrested or charged with a criminal offense are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The charges listed in this release are merely accusations, and the defendant is entitled to all rights and protections afforded under the law.

🚨 EXTREME HEAT WARNING🚨

The Newbern Police Department wants to remind everyone to take precautions as dangerously hot conditions continue across our area. An Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect through 8:00 PM Sunday, with heat index values expected to reach 110°F or higher.

These temperatures can quickly become dangerous, especially for children, older adults, those working outdoors, and anyone without access to air conditioning.

Please take steps to protect yourself and others:

• Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
• Limit strenuous outdoor activities, particularly during the hottest hours of the afternoon.
• Take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.
• Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing.
• Never leave a child or pet inside a vehicle — even for a few minutes.
• Check on elderly family members, friends, and neighbors who may need assistance.

Forecasters indicate this stretch of dangerous heat could continue into the middle of next week, so please continue to monitor conditions and take the heat seriously.

Juvenile Charged with Aggravated Arson Following Apartment Fire Investigation

Newbern, TN- During the evening hours of August 2, 2026, the Newbern Police Department and the Newbern Fire Department responded to the McCullough Street Apartments in reference to a reported structure fire.

Upon arrival, emergency personnel discovered a fire that was contained to the laundry room area of the apartment complex. The fire was quickly extinguished, preventing further damage to the building and helping ensure residents' safety.

Due to the suspicious nature of the fire, the Newbern Police Department Criminal Investigations Division initiated an investigation with the assistance of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI).

As a result of the investigation, a 15-year-old male juvenile was identified as the suspect and taken into custody. The juvenile has been charged with Aggravated Arson. Following his arrest, he was transported to the McDowell Center for processing pending a hearing in Juvenile Court.

The Newbern Police Department would like to thank the Newbern Fire Department and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation for their assistance and professionalism throughout this investigation.

Because this case involves a juvenile, no additional identifying information will be released.

Hit-and-Run Investigation Results in Arrest

Newbern, TN- On July 31, 2026, officers with the Newbern Police Department responded to a reported hit-and-run accident on East Main Street.

Upon arrival, officers learned that a vehicle had been struck and the other vehicle involved had left the scene without providing the required information. Responding officers immediately initiated an investigation and, through their efforts, located the suspect vehicle and identified the driver as Taylor Sipes, 20, of Newbern.

Sipes was cooperative with officers in the investigation and was charged with Leaving the Scene of an Accident. He is scheduled to appear in Newbern Municipal Court at a later date.

Chief Barr praised the responding patrol officers, stating, "I want to commend our patrol officers for their professionalism and dedication throughout this investigation. Their attention to detail and commitment to serving our community reflect the high standards we strive to uphold every day."

By placing red sand into sidewalk cracks during today’s event, participants symbolized the millions of individuals who metaphorically “fall through the cracks” into human trafficking and exploitation. This simple yet powerful visual serves as a reminder that we all have a role in recognizing those who may be vulnerable and taking action to help protect them.

We are grateful to stand alongside so many organizations dedicated to raising awareness and protecting those at risk. Initiatives like the Red Sand Project remind us that ending human trafficking begins with education, awareness, and a commitment to looking out for one another.
