Arrest Following Foot Pursuit on Wheatley Drive
During the late evening hours of August 23, 2026, officers with the Newbern Police Department responded to the area of Wheatley Drive regarding a report of a disorderly person.
While officers were conducting their on-scene investigation, the suspect, later identified as James Cahill, 18, fled from officers on foot. During the ensuing foot pursuit, Cahill brandished a handgun. Officers continued the pursuit and took Cahill into custody without further incident.
During the investigation, officers determined that the fi***rm in Cahill's possession had been reported stolen. It was also discovered that Cahill was wanted out of Illinois on active warrants.
As a result of the investigation, Cahill has been charged with Evading Arrest, Unlawful Possession of a Fi***rm, Fugitive from Justice, Burglary, and Theft of a Fi***rm Under $2,500.
Cahill is currently being held at the Dyer County Law Enforcement Center pending an appearance in Newbern Municipal Court.
The Newbern Police Department would like to recognize the officers involved for their professionalism and restraint in safely bringing this incident to a conclusion despite the presence of a fi***rm.
All persons arrested or charged with a criminal offense are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The charges listed in this release are merely accusations, and the defendant is entitled to all rights and protections afforded under the law.
