📢 PSA: Scam Alert!
The City of Newberg has been made aware of scam activity involving individuals impersonating City staff to collect fraudulent payments tied to land use, permitting, and development applications.
These emails often reference real project details and use the names of actual City employees, making them appear official. A recent version claims an application has been recommended for approval, but that final approval is contingent on paying an attached invoice, typically by wire transfer.
This same scam pattern has been showing up in cities across the country, including Minneapolis, Miami, and Houston, so Newberg is far from alone in seeing it.
Please be advised: the City of Newberg will never request payment through email correspondence or wire transfer, and staff will never ask you to confirm payment by sending a wire receipt.
If you receive a suspicious email, text, or letter claiming to be from the City, don't reply or send any payment information. Call the Community Development Department directly at (503) 537-1240 to verify your application status, or stop by Newberg City Hall in person.
We urge all residents and applicants to stay alert and report suspicious communications. Your awareness helps protect our community from fraud.
