NOTICE: Special Assessment renewal for Fire/Police/EMS:
The residents of the City of Newaygo have recently been mailed a notice regarding a special assessment district that is being setup to fund Fire/Police/EMS services. The City has used this funding mechanism for decades. This funding mechanism expires every 15 years and needs to be re-setup/renewed, which is what is currently taking place. The special assessment is nearly the same as the past, except the language has been broadened from just Fire services to include also police and EMS services, just in case there are shortfalls in funding those services. Moving forward, we anticipate funding levels to remain similar to the past several years, which means little or no change to the tax rate. In trying to care for the community, public safety and emergency services are very important. With properly setup funding mechanisms, we are better able to maintain these critical services should any changes happen at the State level that would affect the City’s finances. The setup process requires the City to send out several notices, so expect more to arrive in your mail box in the coming weeks. In the past, a notice was published each year in case a person wanted to attend a hearing on the amount for the current budget. This practice will continue, except that you will also receive a notice in the mail versus just a notice in the newspaper.
What is described above relates ONLY to the residents of the City of Newaygo. The City is not expanding its borders or trying to pay for a new district, but simply renewing a funding mechanism that has been utilized for many years. The district boundary is unchanged as well. It remains the City limits as has in the past.
